speaker Dr. David Cortright, "The Power of Nonviolence: Why peaceful
methods are more effective than the use of force." He is director of
policy studies at the Kroc Institute for International peace studies at
the University of Notre Dame. The lecture series began in 1985 to
commemorate the life and work of A. J. Muste, a Hope alumnus who became

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY
The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) is seeking
donations of goods and services from individuals and businesses for its
silent auction Saturday, Dec. 7; auction is part of annual Holiday
Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party (5 pm to 8:30 pm) with family
activities, performances, music, ethnic foods, and fellowship. If you
can contribute a gift certificate to a restaurant or other business,
event tickets, a book relevant to diversity, handmade jewelry or
crafts, art, photographs, or a service, please contact Auction Chair

outreach, programs, publications, scholarship fund, and community

EMPLOYMENT
Justice for Our Neighbors-West Michigan seeks a half-time (flexible, 20
hours per week; $11-$14 per hour depending on qualifications) legal
assistant who will be based in Grand Rapids and perform general office
operations, client management support, and assistance to the JFON
attorney in the Holland and Grand Rapids immigration clinics.
Requirements: commitment to public interest law and to the
enfranchisement and empowerment of newcomer immigrant communities,
appreciation of the spiritual principles of the work, and ability to
work sensitively with diverse volunteers and clients. Foreign language
ability, in particular Spanish, is necessary; BIA accreditation or
prior immigration law experience is a plus. Apply by Fri, Nov 8.

Hoogstsra will share on the topic "Dutch Isolationist," followed by
discussion of strategies to address issues on the "wish list" from the

Wed, Oct 23, 7 pm: Performance by Act on Racism theater troupe from
GVSU, followed by discussion. AoR's stories and audience responses

Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony Meeting: Friday

Fri, Oct 11, 7 pm: "Connecting People in Holland: Hear All About It."
People from two Holland neighborhood organizations: Heights of Hope and
Westcore Neighbors, and the life enrichment coordinator from a local
nursing and rehab facility, will speak to the general meeting of the
Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).

Mandy Bullers Hutcheson of Heights of Hope and Raul Garcia of Westcore
Neighbors will tell about their groups, what they are doing, and their
plans for the future. Ron Schuster of Tendercare will discuss the need
for and benefits of connecting older people and the wider community.

Sat, Oct 12, 10 am to noon: Workshop to make nichos with Anna and Luz
Martinez. Traditional Mexican and Latin American folk craft to create
