Tues, Jan 31, 6:30 pm jazz, 7 pm readings: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series, with Hope College professors David Cho and Heather Sellers. Poet Cho, the son of Korean immigrants, is author of "Song of Our Songs" and "Night Sessions" and a scholarly book on 20^th century Korean American novels to be published in 2012. Sellers has published short stories, poetry, and books on writing. Her best-known work is her memoir "You Don't Look Like Anyone I Know." The Center of African American Art and History will hold its grand opening in Holland on January 16, 2012 (the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr), at 21 West 16^th Street.

The museum will feature exhibits and commemorations of history-making events; Dr. King and his life story; history of African Americans in Holland; the underground railroad; replicas of a slave ship and life on a cotton plantation; what African Americans are contributing today, and much more. Help Students Look at Race in the Media, Recognize Stereotypes

Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance needs volunteers for youth conferences that will be held from 9 am to 11 am on Oct 10 (middle schoolers) and Oct 11 (high schoolers) at Hope College. Volunteers facilitate a dialogue on race issues with a small group of students, using materials that look at race in the media; the discussion will help students recognize stereotypes and develop skills to analyze representations of race in media. Experience in dialogue facilitation is helpful but not necessary. To volunteer, you must attend a training session to learn the materials and be matched with a co-facilitator. INSTITUTES FOR HEALING RACISM

Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance has announced changes in the dates for fall Institutes for Healing Racism:

--An eight-week Institute will now be 3 to 5 pm on Tuesdays beginning Oct. 4 through Nov. 16, and Nov. 29. Cost is $100.

--A two-day Institute, "Continuing the Conversation," for previous participants in an Institute, will now be Wed, Nov 16, and Thurs, Nov 17, from 8 am to 5 pm. Cost is $125.

Both Institutes will be held at GVSU Meijer Campus, Room 104, 515 South Waverly, Holland. Financial hardship scholarships are available to anyone who cannot afford the Institute fees. Contact www.ethnicdiversity.org for more information and registration.

Art Prize 2011
