The following letter is from Marvin Younger, a member of the board of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony.

Dear Friends,

 

The work of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) takes many volunteers, and we are pleased to have people who are willing to pitch in on programs, activities, outreach, and advocacy.

 

However, it also takes money.  The ACEH Board, in cooperation with the Disability Network/Lakeshore, could use your help to raise funds so that we can continue to build communities where everyone can participate.

 

Join us for "Let's Walk and  Roll!" on  Thursday, June 14, 2007, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.  We'll meet at Via Maria Restaurant, 13 West 7^th Street, to enjoy a half-hour walk through beautiful downtown Holland and fellowship with other walkers, followed by appetizers and drinks on the restaurant's back deck.

 

Please sign up sponsors in advance for any amount.  This doesn't require a lot of time or effort.  Forms are available at Leaf and Bean Too, 19^th  and Columbia Ave., or request one from ACEH at aceh@harmonyalliance.org.

 

Or, you can write a check to the Disability Network/Lakeshore (please put "ACEH/Walk and Roll" in the memo line) and mail it to the Network at 426 Century Lane, Holland 49423; attention: Kim Romero.

 

Fifty percent of all funds raised for Walk and Roll by ACEH members and friends will come directly to ACEH.  Contributions are tax-deductible.

 

Please give this your careful attention, so we may continue our efforts to make this a welcoming community for everyone.

Tues, June 12, 1 pm, or Wed, June 13, 6:30 pm: Informational meetings for community organizations interested in learning about the local Reciprocal Language Partnership, which pairs Native English speakers with Native Spanish speakers in classes for language learning, cultural exchange, and community building. Thurs, June 14, 5 pm:  Annual Walk and Roll fundraiser of the Disability Network/Lakeshore, which provides assistance and services to area persons with disabilities.  ACEH is partnering with the Disability Network; funds raised by ACEH members and friends will be divided between the two organizations. For donation form, contact aceh@harmonyalliance.org or pick up one at Leaf and Bean coffee shop, 19^th and Columbia. Event includes half-hour walk through downtown Holland, followed by appetizers and beverages at Via Maria Restaurant.  Meet at Via Maria, 13 West 7^th St, Holland.

 

Sat, June 16, 1 to 7 pm: Annual celebration of Juneteenth, including keynote speaker Dr. Fred Johnson at 3 pm, talent show, food booths, information tables.  ACEH will offer information and children's activities at the event (there will not be a regular ACEH meeting in June).  Sponsored by Core City CCDC, 355-0071.  At Kollen Park band shell area, Van Raalte Ave. near 12^th St., Holland.

"I know in my heart the dream will be realized.  I choose to believe.  And choosing is a powerful thing.  It's available to you at every moment.  You can choose understanding over anger, believing over nonbelieving, action over inaction.  It gives meaning to every choice we make."… Yolanda Denise King, first-born child of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King.  A human rights activist, Miss King died May 15 at age 51.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED:  Migrant mentor program of Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance (LEDA) matches children from local migrant families with community volunteers; mentors spend a minimum of 2 hours per week, days and times flexible, in various activities.  Program runs spring to fall; Spanish skills a plus but not necessary.  Must have own transportation.  Contact Teresa Van Oosterhout, (616) 405-5439 or teresa@ethnicdiversity.org.
