Sun, Sept 7: The Holland Sentinel will publish an ad with signatures of more than 2,500 people who pledge to: Support the Park Township family whose driveway was defaced August 17 with a seriously offensive racial slur and caricature; encourage prompt action to bring the perpetrator(s) to justice; celebrate diversity; and commit themselves to be anti-racist in their personal and community lives.  Supported and organized, with the family's input and consent, by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance, Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, Latin Americans United for Progress, area churches, and other organizations and individuals.

Wed, Sept 10, 6:30 pm: Think Sustainable Film Series: "Two Towns of Jasper."  On June 7, 1998, a sleepy east Texas town awoke to the news of a horrifying crime. This documentary covers the 1998 racially motivated murder of James Byrd Jr. in Jasper, Texas.  At Herrick District Library Auditorium, River Ave at 13^th St, Holland.

Wed, Sept 10, 7 pm (doors open at 6:15 pm): Tulipanes event: Concert by internationally recognized soprano Martha Juliana Ayech Rodriguez of Querétaro, Mexico, Holland's sister city. The program honors the 150^th anniversary of Puccini. Through Sat, Aug 16, 7 pm and 9 pm: Film, "The Band's Visit": "The Alexandria (Egypt) Ceremonial Police Orchestra arrives is Israel for a cultural event, only to find there is no delegation to meet them, or arrangements to get to their destination.  As the band settles in (in the wrong town), each of the members attempts to get along with the local people in his own way."  Comedy/drama in English, Arabic, and Hebrew with English subtitles; rated PG-13.  $6; $5 for seniors, students.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8^th St, Holland.

 

Sat, Aug 16, 10 am to 1 pm: Salsa Showdown at Holland Farmers Market, with entries prepared by pre-registered amateurs (individuals and teams) and restaurants in the categories of mild, hot, and inferno.  Public will be charged $3 fee for unlimited chips, salsa tastings, and judging form.  Sponsored by City Flats Hotel, CityVu Bistro.  Proceeds of the event go to Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP). Mon, Aug 18, noon: "Up in the UP with Bill Jamerson."  Escanaba-based songwriter/storyteller Bill Jamerson will perform an hour-long program of original songs about iron miners, ski jumpers, lumberjacks, and the ethnic traditions of the Finnish people.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

Sat, Aug 30, daytime: Community block party, sponsored by Zion Community Church.  ACEH will have an information table at the event.  At Zion Community Church parking lot, 14^th St and Van Raalte Ave, Holland.

 

Fri, Sept 5, 6 pm to 8 pm: First Friday workshop to create Pinwheels for Peace, of all shapes and sizes; as part of the creation process, participants will write their thoughts about "war and peace, tolerance, living in harmony with others" on one side; on the other, they will draw, paint, collage, etc. to visually express their feelings.  Pinwheels will be assembled and "planted" in the Arts Council garden in recognition of the International Day of Peace, Sept 20. www.hollandarts.org or (616) 396-3278.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8^th, Holland.

Sunday, Aug 10, 1:30 pm: 10^th annual Potluck in the Park of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).  Public is invited.  Please bring a dish to share, from your family's ethnic background; ACEH will provide beverages and table service.  Music, children's activities including a piñata, fellowship and good conversation, and great food.  Invite your neighbors, newcomers and "old-timers" in the community, co-workers, friends and family.
