TONIGHT, Mon, Feb 18 – Fri, Feb 22, 7 pm: "Celebrating the Rich History of African American Women. Part 1: Preachers, pioneers, innovators, poets, civic leaders."   2013 Black History Month event, by Zion Dominion Church.  Each night a guest speaker will celebrate contributions, obstacles, sacrifice, and legacy of an outstanding African American woman. Sat, Feb 23, 11 am:  Juneteenth Book Dedication to Herrick District Library, by the African Awareness and Development Organization.  Special reading by Miss Rosie in the character of Harriet Tubman; Ready for School will provide books written and illustrated by award-winning African American authors.  For more information, see www.aaad-juneteenth.org  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

Mon, Mar 4, 7 pm: Holland is Ready meeting with Dr. James V. Brownson, professor of New Testament Studies at Western Theological Seminary, discussing his new book: "Bible, Gender, Sexuality: Reframing the Church's Debate on Same-Sex Relationships."  Free, open to the public.  At Grace Episcopal Church 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
 
RACIAL EQUITY INSTITUTE
March 7-8, 8 am to 4:30 pm: Two-day Racial Equity Institute, an educational and interactive program of "learning, sharing, and processing through a racially diverse group" using facilitated dialogues and activities to examine the "internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels of racial equity."   $130 per person, includes light breakfast, lunch, refreshments; financial hardship scholarships available by request.  Register online at www.ethnicdiversity.org or (616) 846-9074.  Sponsored by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance.  At Grand Valley State University Meijer Campus, 515 South Waverly, Holland.

Thurs, Jan 31, noon: "Beyond Diversity: Challenging Racism in an Age of Backlash," by nationally known anti-racist educator and author Tim Wise.  How most "tolerance" training fails to address fundamental structures of racism and inequality; focusing on personal prejudice rather than institutional bias is inadequate for building an anti-racist movement and results in a negative impact on all Americans.  At Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Thurs, Jan 31, 3 to 4:30 pm: Retirement recognition event to honor Al Serrano, Community and Human Relations Coordinator for the City of Holland; he has served the city for 27 years.  At Holland City Hall, 270 South River, Holland.
