AND we're back!!! Starting out the New Year, it's never too late – or too early in the year – to join ACEH or renew your membership. Your dues let us continue our outreach in West Michigan through "In the Community," a monthly Newsletter, public programs, advocacy on current issues, and community social events.

Informal and open forum to share suggestions, concerns, comments with members of Holland City Council and city appointed officials as they began to prepare the Fiscal Year 2020 budget for the city. At Holland City Hall, 270 South River, Holland. [See also Jan 12 listing.]
Wed, Jan 9, 7 pm: Holland Interfaith Allies "Know Your Neighbors" series: Members of the Baha'i community will speak about their experience of living in West Michigan. (Previous panels have spoken from Muslim, NONE, Hindu, and Jewish perspectives.) Free, open to the public. At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.
Thurs, Jan 10, 4 pm to 7 pm (ribbon-cutting at 4 pm, presentation at 5:30 pm): Dedication and open house for State Street Townhomes, the affordable housing pilot project from Third Coast Homes. Tour the townhomes, learn about the residents, hear about future plans for mixed-income housing by the Third Coast Homes partnership. At 2911 State St, Zeeland.

Wed, Jan 16, 7 pm: Holland Openly Secular Alliance (HOSA). Panel presentation on "Secular Parenting and GrandParenting." At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.
Fri, Jan 18, 7 pm support group, 8 pm program: PFLAG meeting to hear transition story of Jamie Lynn Hemphill. She will also attend the Gender SAFE meeting at 6 pm. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
Sat, Jan 19, noon: Women's March 2019: A sister march to the national march in Washington, DC "bringing together people of all genders, ages, races, cultures, political affiliations, disabilities, and backgrounds to affirm our shared humanity and pronounce our bold message of resistance and self-determination, to stand up for women's rights and human rights." Mon, Jan 21, 12:30 pm: "Dreaming the End of Racial America," presentation by Willie Jennings, associate professor of Systematic Theology and Africana Studies, Yale University, and author of the award-winning book "The Christian Imagination: Theology and the Origins of Race." Part of the Calvin College January Series. At the college and via the web at Christ Memorial Church, Holland; Second Christian Reformed Church, Grand Haven; and Frauenthal Center Beardsley Theater, Muskegon.
Mon, Jan 21, 2 pm: Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Civil Rights Lecture at Hope College, by Dr. Joy DeGruy, renowned researcher, educator, author ("Post-Traumatic Slave Syndrome"). Her theme will be "We Have Been Here Before: Challenges and Courageous Alternatives." Sponsored by Herman Miller Inc, the Center for Diversity and Inclusion, multicultural student organizations, and the GROW Collaboration. Admission is free. Mon, Jan 21, 6:30 pm: Reel Time Film Series of Holland's International Relations Commission: "The Occupation of the American Mind": "an analysis of Israel's decades-long battle for the hearts, minds, and tax dollars of the American people." Free. At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

Thurs, Dec 13, through Mar 10, 2019: "SONS: Seeing the Modern African American Male. More than 80 photographs of Muskegon men, selected by a committee of their peers and representing "a broad array of backgrounds, professions, and socioeconomic status." Photography and video are used "to mimic the process of prejudging people…and reconciling prejudgments with realities." At Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 West Webster Ave, Muskegon.
Fri, Jan 11, through Mon, Feb 25: "Seeing through Dutch Eyes." Paintings by Dutch-American artist Chris Stoffel Overvoorde, in several components: Early Years/The Shipyard, Learning Period/Drawing, Transitions/Acrylic and Oil Paintings, and Self Portraits. --Or you can write a check to ACEH, c/o Treasurer Al Minert, Box 3007, Holland, MI 49422-3007;
--Or you can join at any ACEH program or social event.
Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years);
$30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years);
$40 for a nonprofit;
$75 for a business.
In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. Our fiscal year is October 1 to September 30.
