Tues, Sept 29, 7 pm: Holland Gang Reduction Committee meeting; open to individuals or organizations that work with teens.  Meeting to view and discuss the newly designed website of community activities that teens can access.  At Holland Police Station, 8^th St and Pine Ave, Holland.

Mon, Oct 12, 7 pm: Hope College Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series presents winners of 2009 Great Lakes College Association New Writers awards Don Waters and Aracelis Girmay.  Waters writes stories set in the American Southwest. Girmay is a poet whose works reflect her Eritrean, Puerto Rican, and African American heritage. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8^th St, Holland.

 

TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES:

 

Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) is starting new computer classes beginning the week of October 19.  Classes meet once a week for six weeks, three hours at a time.  Classes offered are basic computer skills or advanced training.  A donation of $10 is requested at registration but not required for enrollment.  Call (616) 392-5058 to enroll.  Classes are held at the LAUP computer lab, Midtown Center, 16^th St and Pine Ave, Holland.

 

Amway Global wants to hire customer care associates who are fluent in English and in Spanish, Russian, Korean or Mandarin, and who have business writing skills in both languages.  A new training class begins Monday, October 26.  Contact SE Manpower office at 957-0461 to set up an appointment for testing and interviews.

Wed, Sept 23, 2 pm until 8 pm:  Holland Flood Relief Task Force is offering information and assistance to low-income families dealing with flood damage to their homes.  Presentations on safe flood clean-up at 3, 5, and 7 pm; needs assessments for low-income homeowners in zip codes 49423 and 49424 who have no flood insurance.  Free, open to the public.  At Midtown Center, 2^nd floor, 96 West 15^th St, Holland.

The World Studies at Hope:

International Students to Meet with ACEH

 September 25 at Martha Miller Center

 

It's a little out of the regular meeting schedule of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, but on Friday, September 25, ACEH members and community friends will have an opportunity to hear from international students at Hope College.

 

The meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., will be held in the Rotunda of the Martha Miller Center on campus, located at 10^th Street and Columbia Avenue, Holland.  The public is invited.

 

In the program, "The World Studies at Hope," international students will share their perspectives on global education and studying in the United States.

 

Amy Otis-De Grau, director of the Fried International Center at the college, said the gathering will be an opportunity for people to meet and greet students from a variety of countries. Local residents can become host families for students while they are at Hope, providing hospitality from time to time and developing friendships that could last a lifetime.

 

Twenty-eight foreign countries are represented in this year's student body of 3,200:  Afghanistan, Armenia, Australia, Brazil, China, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Ghana, India, Japan, Kenya, Korea, Mexico, Myanmar, Nether- lands, Nigeria, Serbia, Sierra Leone, Singapore, South Africa, Sweden, Taiwan, Uganda, United Kingdom, Venezuela, Vietnam, and West Bank.
