ESL CLASSES

(1) Free English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are being offered by Sparta/Zeeland Adult Education:  Three levels of instruction, with classes on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 am to 11:30 am. An advanced afternoon class is available to study for GED and National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC). Call 494-8803 for information and registration. Classes are held at Engedi Church in the former K-Mart Plaza, Waverly Road and Chicago Drive, Holland.

(2) Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) ESL classes begin the week of Sept. 12 and will be held every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at Martha Miller Center, Hope College, Columbia Ave and 10th St, Holland.  People interested in classes must attend one of the three orientation meetings (about an hour), to discuss expectations of the class, gather information, and take a placement test (Tues, Aug 23, 10 am; Thurs, Aug 25, 6 pm; or Sat, Aug 27, noon).  Call (616) 392-5058 to sign up.  At LAUP office, Midtown Center, 16th St between River and Pine, Holland.

The Steps to Success Program of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) is offering these free classes, taught in a bilingual setting; both meet at the LAUP Computer Lab, Midtown Center, 16th between River and Pine, Holland.  Call (616) 594-7109 for information. 

·          GED classes meet Wednesday (5 – 8 pm) and Thursday (5 – 6:30 pm), starting the week of Sept. 5.

TONIGHT, Mon, Aug 1, 5 – 8 pm: 20th annual National Night Out: "A Going Away Party for Crime and Drugs": Aims to strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, generate support for anti-crime programs, etc: Music, kids' games and prizes, pie-eating contest, bingo, hot dogs for first 3,000 people, vintage car show, more.  Sponsored by City of Holland and many local organizations.  At Kollen Park, Van Raalte and 10th at Lake Macatawa, Holland.

Tues, Aug 2: 8 am to 8 pm: Primary election for two seats on the Holland City Council.  There are three candidates for 2nd Ward councilman (Victor Orozco, Jay Peters, Gerardo Tonini) and three for an at-large seat (Wayne Klomparens, Scott Troeger, Ron Chavez).  The top two vote-getters for each seat will run in the November election.  If someone receives 50 percent plus 1 of the primary vote for either 2nd Ward or at-large, he will win that seat.

 

Tues, Aug 2, 7 to 10 pm: Continuation of National Night Out "In Your Neighborhood."  First 25 blocks that sign up will get a certificate for free ice cream for their Night Out get-together.  For more information, call City of Holland Ourstreet Office, 355-3139.  Locations: On the street where you live.

Mon, Aug 15, 6 pm: DREAM Act Forum: Video, speakers, discussion to inform the community about provisions and impact of the proposed federal DREAM Act, which would provide a structured path to citizenship for undocumented youth brought to the U.S. as children.  At Park Theatre, River Ave between 10th and 11th Sts, Holland.
