UPCOMING ACEH EVENTS
 
Sat, Nov 10, 2 pm (NOTE new time/place this month):  For its November meeting, ACEH is collaborating with the Holland Museum to present "Speak Now," a documentary film by Adelante youth of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) who interviewed local residents about their experiences in West Michigan.  Open to the public, everyone is welcome.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.
 
Sat, Dec 8, 5 pm: Annual ACEH Holiday Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party.  Bring a dish to share from your heritage and a nonperishable item for a local food bank; ACEH provides beverages and table service.  Music, art activities, entertainment, auction of goods and services—lots of fun for the whole family.  Everyone is welcome.  At First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St (use 9th Street entrance), Holland.

TONIGHT, Mon, Oct 29, 7 pm: Film, "Come See the Paradise."  Depicting one of the most controversial events in U.S. history, the film is about a soldier who falls in love with a Japanese-American woman who is sent by authorities to live in a detainment camp.   Free, open to public. Tues, Oct 23, 4 pm: "Reconciling Differences Through Intergroup Dialogue."  Presented by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education with several faculty and administrators; provides an opportunity for interactions with people from different social identity groups and a safe environment in which topics of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender, and class will be discussed; includes activities, individual and small group reflections, and dialogues.  Open to the community.  At Maas Conference Room, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 23, 6 to 9 pm: Opening session of West Coast Connect (formerly Holland First), "learning about the community through the eyes of diversity and promoting cultural awareness and community leadership."  Sessions are free and run on Tuesdays through Dec. 18.  Registration required.

Thurs, Oct 4, 7 pm: Community Conversation: Free Speech or Racial Bias. Discussion of a recent incident in which a Grand Haven homeowner hung chairs by ropes in trees above a politically-based sign; the home is near an elementary school and the situation "caused discomfort to staff and children began asking what it meant."  Sponsored by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance with Grand Haven Area Public Schools.  At Grand Haven Community Center Escanaba Room, 421 Columbus St, Grand Haven.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES:

Exhibit, through Nov. 3: Obiter Dicta: Contemporary Latino Artists: works by 5 artists from the lakeshore on display at the Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Exhibit, through Dec 31: Tenemos una voz ("We have a voice").  Adelante youth art and writings, supported by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP).  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th, Holland (closed Tuesdays). 

 

EMPLOYMENT:

1) Account clerk-cashier: Part-time for City of Holland. $12.50 per hour. High school graduate; one to two years of business school or college business courses with an accounting emphasis is preferred; six months to a year experience as a cashier or related position.  Applications available on city website www.cityofholland.com

 

2) Program coordinator: Part-time (20-24 hours per week for 10 ½ months) for CASA (Children's After School Achievement), a community program of Hope College.  Two or more years' experience in education, nonprofits, social work, and/or administration; demonstrated experience with and understanding of diverse youth; four-year college degree; bilingual in Spanish preferred.  Deadline to apply is October 12.  Send one-page cover letter addressing how your experience would benefit CASA; a current resume; three professional references, to fgreen@hope.edu
