 Sat, Mar 30, 3 pm:  French Film Festival:  Documentary, "Serenade for Haiti." Filmed over a seven-year period, features children and faculty of a Haitian school; when the 2010 earthquake destroys the school, "…devastated faculty and students must pick up the pieces and find a way to adapt."  Sponsored by Hope's Department of Modern and Classical Languages.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Mon, Apr 1 – Sat, Apr 6, 7:30 pm: Film, "Woman at War."  Halla, an independent woman  in her late 40s, declares war on local aluminum industry to stop its operations in Iceland; in the midst of her activism, her application to adopt a child from Ukraine is approved and she is faced with the challenge of having this addition to her life while still fighting for her cause.  Film is in Icelandic, English, Spanish, and Norwegian, with English subtitles.  Not rated.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

Tues, Apr 2, 2 pm and 7 pm: "Spirit of Rosa Parks," presented by Rosie Chapman, master storyteller, playwright, drama coach, and motivational speaker who "brings the Civil Rights movement and Rosa Parks to life."  Suitable for all ages; performances are identical.  At (2 pm) Boys & Girls Club North, 583 Riley, Holland, and (7 pm) Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 Fri, Apr 12, 7 pm:  Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) meeting: "Recognizing and Counteracting Microaggressions (when our biases show up in the community)": workshop by interculturalist Alan Headbloom of Grand Rapids.  Looking Ahead

Sat, Apr 20, 5 pm:  Songkran 2019 Celebration of Southeast Asia.  First of its kind in Holland, this event, known as the "Water Festival," marks the traditional New Year (April) in Thailand, Laos, and Cambodia—cleansing away the old and welcoming a new beginning.  Traditional performances, Muay Thai, foods, booths of authentic jewelry and gifts, DJ and dancing. Short-term exchange program:  Want to be a host family for an international student but can't commit to a whole school year? Greenheart Exchange has short-term students for the summer, from three to eight weeks, for cultural exchange, to volunteer, or to be a language buddy teaching you some of their language in exchange for help with their English.  Mon, Mar 11 – Sat, Mar 16, 7:30 pm: Award-winning documentary, "Day of the Western Sunrise." Follows survivors from a Japanese tuna fishing boat after U.S. detonated the first in a series of hydrogen-weapon tests; film adapted the Japanese storytelling method  "kamishibai," or "paper drama," and the scenes are individual drawings with paper texture animated in a 3D environment.  In Japanese with English subtitles; not rated. Producer Keith Reimink a Zeeland native, will be at the showings for Q&A on Mar 11 and Mar 14.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Tues, Mar 12, noon:  Simulcast of Lebanese journalist Rania Abouzeid discussing "Life After the Arab Uprisings and the Islamic State."  Part of the Great Decisions Global Discussion 2019 lecture series, hosted by Holland's International Relations Commission in partnership with World Affairs Council of West Michigan.  Abouzeid, an award-winning journalist and author, has covered the Middle East and South Asia for more than 15 years.  At Holland City Hall Council Chambers, 270 S. River, Holland.

 Fri, Mar 15, 7 pm support group; 8 pm program:  PFLAG meeting.  Showing film "Becoming More Visible," the stories of four transgender youth, "how they are challenged from their early childhood by how to identify and then defy societal norms to become their true selves, and more visible."  Gender SAFE (Supporting All for Equality) meets from 6 to 8 pm. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 Sat, Mar 16, noon:  St. Patrick's Day parade, marching from the Civic Center east on 8th Street, downtown Holland.

Sat, Mar 16, 5 pm:  20th anniversary celebration of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).  All are welcome at this cultural sharing party and potluck featuring entertainment, family activities, an auction of new goods and services, fun, fellowship, and—of course—delicious foods.  Please bring a dish to share from your family background, and a nonperishable item for a local food bank.  At First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 57 West 10th St (use 9th St entrance), Holland.

CETUSA (Council for Educational Travel, USA) has young men and women from Spain, Denmark, Italy, Thailand, Brazil, more.
