The Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) invites you and your family and friends to its annual Heart 2 Heart Community Celebration, a Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party, on Saturday, February 17, from 5 p.m. to 8:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St, Holland.
Please plan to bring a dish to share from your cultural background, and a nonperishable item for a local food bank. There will be fun, fellowship, fabulous food, family activities, music, and performances to entertain all ages, plus a silent auction of goods and services to support ACEH's work in our community.

Sun, Feb 18, 1 pm to 4:30 pm: Taste of Soul Sunday. Celebration of African American history and culture: live music, food, presentations, workshops on family history, poetry, kids' crafts. Free. At Grand Rapids Public Library main branch, 111 Library St, Grand Rapids.
Tues, Feb 20, 6 pm: 2018 Black History Lecture: "Black Students in Higher Education: Disparities, Challenges, and Triumphs." Dr. Tonisha Lane, University of South Florida, will include issues such as implicit bias, campus climate, racial microaggressions, stereotype threat, sense of belonging; she holds a Ph.D. from MSU and has many awards for her research on the experiences and outcomes of underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Sponsored by Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion. At Bultman Student Center Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Tues, Feb 20, 7 pm: "Harriet Tubman & the Underground Railroad." Rosie Chapman performs as Tubman (who helped liberate hundreds of slaves before and during the Civil War) and involves the audience in her presentation. At Herrick District Library Children's Area, 300 South River, Holland.
Thurs, Feb 22, 6 pm to 8 pm (dinner 6 pm to 6:30 pm).: Visitor night at Circles Ottawa County. Come to learn more about this Good Samaritan program and enjoy a meal and fellowship with participants. Circles Ottawa County brings families of diverse incomes together to help low-income families achieve their financial goals; it also collaborates with community partners in an effort to end poverty on a county-wide scale. Matches Leaders (financially vulnerable community members motivated to change their lives) with Allies (volunteers who believe Leaders can achieve their goals and who commit to be with them as they complete the program). There is also a Circles Youth Program for ages up to 16.

Community Opportunity
The Promote the Vote Campaign is looking for people to host gatherings in their homes in Holland, Saugatuck/Douglas, West Olive, etc., on Wednesday, February 21, to kick off a campaign to put a voting rights amendment to the Michigan constitution on the November 2018 ballot. Backed by a coalition of the League of Women Voters, ACLU, NAACP, and others, the amendment would protect the right to a secret ballot, provide equal access to absentee ballots, allow citizens to register closer to Election Day (as most states do), give the option to vote straight party ticket, automatically register citizens to vote at the Secretary of State's office unless the citizen declines, create rules that remove barriers and make voting more secure. "Black Heroes/Black Friday"; shown throughout February: Portraits of black heroes by more than 20 artists. St. Louis, MO, artist Sarah Paulsen, who was involved in the Ferguson Movement following the officer-involved shooting death of Mike Brown, drew 50 portraits of black heroes in four days leading up to Black Friday, the largest shopping day in November and encouraged other artists to do the same.
