Collaborative, Creative." Organized by League of Women Voters -

Smarter Balanced Assessments that will replace the MEAP tests.

the United States and Abroad," by Dr. Richard Carwardine, president of
Corpus Christi College, University of Oxford, noted scholar on Abraham

Sat, Sept 28, 7 pm:  Documentary "Black and Blue, the Story of Gerald Ford, Willis Ward and the 1934 Michigan-Georgia Tech Football Game."  When Georgia Tech demanded that U-M's African American  player Willis Ward be benched before the southern team would play U-M, Gerald Ford threatened to quit the U-M team and students and community protested the decision to keep Ward out of the game; the incident is said to have helped Michigan turn a corner in race relations and shaped Ford's views on civil rights and racial equality all the way to the White House. "Love is Stronger than Hate": Support Fund
 As a follow-up to July attacks that damaged vehicles of African Americans in Holland, the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony has established an account at Macatawa Bank to help reimburse Rev. Wayne and Ruth Coleman and Marvin Younger for auto insurance deductibles and other expenses they will have to pay as a result of the incidents.   
  
 Checks should be written to "ACEH Support Fund: Love is Stronger than Hate," with the account number 7201 1337, and deposited at any Macatawa Bank  branch.

Thurs, Sept 12 – Nov. 2: Ofrenda Installation by artist Roli Mancera in celebration of El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).  According to centuries-old beliefs, the souls of the dead return to earth for one day of the year, wending their way home once the sun passes its zenith on November first. This is the time for families to begin setting up the traditional altar de muertos, laying out an offering of items intended to draw the dead and ease their journey homeward. Key elements of the ofrenda, laid out in a colorful and eye-pleasing symmetrical composition, are steeped in symbolism with roots in both Christian and indigenous beliefsAt Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.
 
Fri, Sept 13: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) will not hold a general meeting in September, but encourages members and friends to attend two public events of the 13th annual Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival at DeWitt Theater, Columbia Ave at 12th St, Holland:   
--  6:30 pm:  Mexika:  presentation of indigenous music/dance from Mexico.  Free.
--  7:30 pm:  Film, "Xingu," Brazilian drama about three brothers who become involved in conflict between the government and developers and the indigenous people who live in the area and who want to preserve their land.  Free.
 
Sat, Sept 14, 11 am: Tulipanes event: Film: "Garifuna in Peril"; a Garifuna language teacher in Honduras struggles to preserve his indigenous culture and communal lands "in the face of tourism's encroachment and personal betrayal."  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

"Love is Stronger than Hate": Support Fund
 As a follow-up to July attacks that damaged vehicles of African Americans in Holland, the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony has established an account at Macatawa Bank to help reimburse Rev. Wayne and Ruth Coleman and Marvin Younger for auto insurance deductibles and other expenses they will have to pay as a result of the incidents.   
  
 Checks should be written to "ACEH Support Fund: Love is Stronger than Hate," with the account number 7201 1337, and deposited at any Macatawa Bank  branch.

Thurs, Sept 12 – Nov. 2: Ofrenda Installation by artist Roli Mancera in celebration of El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead).  According to centuries-old beliefs, the souls of the dead return to earth for one day of the year, wending their way home once the sun passes its zenith on November first. This is the time for families to begin setting up the traditional altar de muertos, laying out an offering of items intended to draw the dead and ease their journey homeward. Key elements of the ofrenda, laid out in a colorful and eye-pleasing symmetrical composition, are steeped in symbolism with roots in both Christian and indigenous beliefsAt Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th, Holland.
 
Fri, Sept 13: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) will not hold a general meeting in September, but encourages members and friends to attend two public events of the 13th annual Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival at DeWitt Theater, Columbia Ave at 12th St, Holland:   
--  6:30 pm:  Mexika:  presentation of indigenous music/dance from Mexico.  Free.
--  7:30 pm:  Film, "Xingu," Brazilian drama about three brothers who become involved in conflict between the government and developers and the indigenous people who live in the area and who want to preserve their land.  Free.
 
Sat, Sept 14, 11 am: Tulipanes event: Film: "Garifuna in Peril"; a Garifuna language teacher in Honduras struggles to preserve his indigenous culture and communal lands "in the face of tourism's encroachment and personal betrayal."  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.
