 TONIGHT, Fri, Feb 28, 7 pm: Gospel Fest: Concert by Hope College Community Gospel Choir and guests, directed by C. J. Kingdom-Grier.  Admission is free; free-will offering will be taken.  At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, 277 College Ave, Holland.

 Wed, March 4, 5 pm: 2020 Asian Heritage Lecture: "Raise Your Voice: Asian American Activism and Advocacy."   Author and speaker Kathy Khang will address the "myth of the model minority in the American dream and what it looks like when Asian Americans embrace the diversity of their experiences as a pillar for activism and advocacy."  Hosted by Hope's Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Hope's Asian Perspective Association-HAPA, GROW diversity council. At Schaap Auditorium, Bultman Student Center, 115 East 12th St, Holland.

 Thurs, March 5, 6:30 pm: "Voices of Our Foremothers": Key figures in women's suffrage movement, played by League of Women Voters members (with the words of Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Ida B. Wells, Henry Blackwell, Carrie Chapman Catt, Alice Paul). Event celebrates 100th anniversary of LWV founding. Open to all.  At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.

 Thurs, March 5, 7 pm: "Peace in the Holy Land; a Palestinian Christian Perspective," by Jonathan Kuttab, human rights attorney who is a Christian Palestinian.  Hosted by Kairos West Michigan, which "seeks a just peace in Israel/Palestine.  At Christ Memorial Church Chapel (east end of the church campus), 595 Graafschap Rd, Holland. 

 Sat, March 7, 10 am:  2nd annual Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings.  Hosted by Gender SAFE (Supporting All For Equality), program will feature new stories about transgender and non-binary youth, a craft and song, a collection of books, and a reading list to take home.  Gender SAFE leaders will be on hand to answer questions and share informational resources.  In main floor meeting room, Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Tues, March 10, 7 am to 8 pm:  Polls open to vote in Michigan's Presidential Primary.  Other issues also will be on the ballot in some area locations.

 Wed, March 11, 4:30 to 6:30 pm:  Community Connections. Open house at which some 45 local nonprofits (including ACEH) will showcase services and help attendees connect with short- and long-term volunteer opportunities. Hosts: MI West Coast Chamber of Commerce and Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance.  Wed, March 11, 6 pm:  Documentary film: "True Justice: Bryan Stevenson's Fight for Equality." Attorney Stevenson is founder and executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice (known informally as the National Lynching Museum) in Montgomery, AL. (A dramatization of his work, "Just Mercy," has been shown across the country, including at the AMC Star 8 Theater in Holland.)  Co-hosted by HOSA, Holland Openly Secular Alliance, and ACEH. Free; open to all; pizza snacks served.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 Sun, March 15, 1 pm to 2:30 pm: "Conversation on Race: America and the Church--Empowering Leaders of Color to Lead in the Church and Beyond."  Panel discussion with Rev. Bernard "Chris" Dorsey, Juanita Bocanegra, Raul Garcia.  Free; open to public. At BLVD Church, 238 West 15th St, Holland.

The annual Community Potluck and Cultural Sharing Party of ACEH:

 "All That Jazz: A Historic Idlewild Experience!"

Come for great live music and a program about the Michigan town of Idlewild where outstanding black entertainers performed when they were shut out of other venues in the state and nation.  Come for fellowship, wonderful food, family activities. Come for the silent auction of goods and services, our chief fundraiser to support scholarships and ACEH work in the community. Everyone is welcome!  Please bring a dish to share from your family's heritage and a nonperishable item for a local food bank.

Community Opportunities

Election Inspectors Needed! 2020 will be an especially busy election year, including a Presidential Primary on March 10, a General Primary on August 4 and the General Election on November 3. The City of Holland is looking for Election Inspectors (the workers at the polls) for these dates and continuing into the following years; you are paid for hours worked.  Community Investment Volunteers Needed:  Greater Ottawa County United Way seeks volunteers to help determine where funds raised during United Way's annual campaign are invested in the areas of education, financial stability/basic needs, health, and affordable housing.  Review applications, tour sites, meet to discuss programs' effectiveness.
