Fri, June 20, 6 pm to 9 pm: Artists' reception for group show "Summer Living."  Included is watercolor artist Dr. Saleef Kafajouffe, former dean and vice president for diversity at Olivet College and consultant in diversity, multiculturalism, human relations, and international student recruitment.  He also teaches African dance and Djembe drumming. His paintings depict his love of sailing.  Free, open to public, refreshments.  At Uptown Gallery & Frame Shop, 205 Columbia Ave, Holland.

 

Sat, June 21, 1 pm to 6 pm: Seventh annual celebration of Juneteenth, with emphasis on education. Keynote speech, music, food and information booths, children's activities.  At Kollen Park, Van Raalte Ave at Lake Macatawa, Holland.

Fri, July 4, 1 pm to 10:30 pm: Celebration Freedom Festival: A Taste of American Cultures, to showcase and celebrate "our diverse community in Holland."  Sponsored by Christ Memorial Church, JQ99, Chemical Bank, and Metal Flow Co.  Performers include Asian dance, martial arts demonstration, CJ Grier Gospel Choir, All For One Dance group (Hip Hop, Mexican, Polynesian dances), Saginaw Chippewa Drums, Evolución Tex/Mex Band, break dancers, Dutch piano, African drums, reggae steel drums, henna art, others.  International-style food booths. Day ends with community fireworks. At Kollen Park, Van Raalte Ave at Lake Macatawa, Holland.

Wed, July 9, 6:30 pm: Free film, "Sunset Story," a humorous documentary drama "that will make you think differently about growing old." Set in a retirement home for political progressives in the heart of central Los Angeles, in a neighborhood of immigrant Latino and Korean families, the film goes inside the world of two women, ages 81 and 95, "whose feisty engagement with life draws them together."   Presented by 3 E's Initiative, Herrick District Library, and Local Future. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

Fri, June 13, 7 pm: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony general meeting; the public is invited.  Showing of the "eye-opening," award-winning video "Blue-Eyed" with discussion led by Rev. Angela Taylor Perry, reconciling minister of Faith Christian Reformed Church, Holland.
