Thurs, Nov. 20, 7 pm: "Act on Racism" performance (rescheduled from Nov. 13) by Grand Valley State University students "to increase awareness and combat issues of racism using real-life instances via educative theater.  Audience members can engage in "open discussion about controversial issues regarding race and ethnicity."  Sponsored by Hope's Asian Perspective Association (HAPA).  At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium (Room 135), Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

Thurs, Nov. 20, 7 pm: Network 180 premiere of "Open Spaces; produced by local mental health recovery advocates, "Open Spaces" is the true stories of five Kent County residents with psychiatric conditions as they explore and discover "open spaces" in their lives.  Information from Sujen Diviney at Sdiviney@grcmc.org   At Wealthy Theatre, 1130 Wealthy St, SE, Grand Rapids.

Thurs, Nov 13, 6 pm: "9/11 to Postville: A New Detour in the War on Terror," by Prof. Erik Camayd-Freixas of Florida State University, who interpreted for people who were jailed during the largest immigration raid in U.S. history, which took place on May 12, 2008, in Postville, Iowa.  Sponsored by Grand Valley State University Latin American Studies.  At GVSU Kirkhof Center, Room 204 Pere Marquette, in Allendale.

Tues, Nov 18, 7 pm: Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series hosts Hip Hop performance poet Toni Blackman; she has been a cultural ambassador with the U.S. State Department and has performed in 16 countries.  She holds a master's degree in organizational communication from Howard University and is founder and director of Freestyle Union, a cipher workshop in New York City that uses free styling "as a tool to encourage social responsibility, especially among young people."  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

Mon, Nov 3, through Sat, Nov 8, 7 and 9 pm: Film, "The Visitor"; the comedy/drama follows 62-year-old professor Walter Vale "who is sleepwalking through life."  His college sends him to Manhattan for a conference and Walter is later surprised to find a Syrian man and his Senegalese girlfriend in his apartment, victims of a real estate scheme; Walter allows them to stay.  Touched by his kindness, Tarek, the Syrian, teaches Walter to play the African drum.  Rated PG-13; in English and Arabic with English subtitles.  $6 admission, $5 seniors.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.
