Tues, June 18, 6 pm: Forum, "Immigration's Impact on Holland," hosted
by the Holland Latino Round Table and presented by Michigan United (a
merger of the Alliance for Immigrants Rights & Reform and the Michigan
Organizing Project). Presenters Denise Lopez and Stephanie Gonzalez of
Michigan United and Veronica Beltran of Holland Latino Round Table will
provide information on immigrants' rights and recent updates to the
proposed federal immigration legislation.
Attorneys Robert Alvarez and Meghan Moore will be present; interpreters
will be available. At 4th Reformed Church, 238 West 15th St, Holland.

Tues, June 18, 7 pm: Program, "Know Your Rights: The Constitution &
You," presented by American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). A panel of
attorneys will talk about current civil liberties issues and how people
can advocate for freedom, equality, and justice in Michigan; topics may
include questions like "what are my rights when confronted by police or
immigration officials; what rights do students have when facing school
discipline; what is the future for LGBT rights in Michigan; what
exactly does 'free speech' mean"? Free and open to the public. RSVP

Caribbean Coalition for the Arts & Culture West Michigan "to connect
with each other and ourselves through the rhythm of drumming, chanting,

Fri, June 21, 10 am-noon: Advocates for Senior Issues (AFSI) meeting.
AFSI is a nonpartisan association of individuals and organizations

Tues, June 11, 7 pm: Program, "Human Trafficking in West Michigan?"
Speaker is David Manville, mediator and social worker who has taught a
course at Eastern Michigan University on human trafficking. A panel of
area professionals will comment on local issues related to human
trafficking, including sex trafficking of young girls, in Michigan.
Free, open to all. Sponsored by Lakeshore Women for Peace in Holland,
and co-sponsored by several local churches and organizations, including

Thurs, June 13 – Sat, June 15: Holland Juneteenth Celebration 2013:
"Thenceforward and forever FREE." Juneteenth is the oldest nationally
celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the U.S., marking
the date in 1865 when slaves in Texas were notified of the Emancipation
Proclamation--two years after it was issued. People of all cultures
and backgrounds are welcomed at these local Juneteenth events:
--Thurs, June 13, 6 pm: Juneteenth play. At Holland Civic Theatre, 50
West 9th St. Free; donation requested.
--Fri, June 14, 6 pm: Royal Court and Top Model Show. $10. At Western
Theological Seminary, 101 East 13th St.
--Sat, June 15, noon to 7 pm: Juneteenth Celebration. Speakers, BBQ,
musical entertainment, children's events, family fun, good fellowship

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
Hosting a student from Spain. Becky Purnell, who teaches Spanish at
Zeeland East High School, seeks host families for three students from
Spain (Maria, age 15, June 25-July 30; Paloma, age 16, June 25-July 13;
Eduardo, 18, June 25-July 13; Berta, age 17, June 25-July 14. The
students' monitor and advocate is a 26-year-old woman who teaches
English in Spain; she also needs housing. The students want to improve
their English skills and gain an understanding of U.S. culture; they
have their own spending money, are covered by insurance, and have
outings and activities about twice a week with their group. If a host
family has a trip planned, the student is permitted to go along. To
