Many of you support us with your dues, which help finance our programs, publications, partnerships, advocacy on current issues, two scholarships, and community social events, and we appreciate you very much. TONIGHT, Fri, Oct 18, 7 pm business/support meeting; 8 pm program: Holland/Lakeshore PFLAG meeting: "Episcopal Journey to Inclusive Church," by the Revs. Jennifer Adams and Jim Steen of Grace Episcopal Church. Gender SAFE (Supporting All for Equity), offering support to persons who are or who love someone who is transgender or gender diverse, meets from 6 to 8 pm. Mon, Oct 21, 6:30 pm: Forum to hear Holland City Council At-Large candidates. Hosted by League of Women Voters to let voters hear and question Lyn Raymond and Vicki-Lynn Holmes, candidates for the at-large seat on Holland City Council. Tues, Oct 22, 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm: Open house at Out On The Lakeshore, to meet new director Jeffrey Sorenson. The LGBTQ+ community center provides support and various programs for youth and adults especially in Ottawa and Allegan counties. At OOTL, 451 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Wed, Oct 23, 1:30 pm: Open house and discussion on proposed zoning ideas, housing survey results; Q&A follows. The City of Holland is crafting "a user-friendly, graphic-heavy, Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to combine all city laws concerning development, to help people to better understand and apply the standards. Looks at each zone district and the general standards to determine how the city can be more responsive to 21st century needs." Free; public is invited to share ideas. Wed, Oct 23, 6 pm: Native American Heritage Event: Film, "Water Warriors," followed by discussion. Hosted by several Hope College offices. At Schaap Auditorium, Bultman Student Center, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
Fri, Oct 25, 6 pm: Right to Housing Rally: No More Tents! A public event to create more support for affordable housing and an end to homelessness in our community; no one should have to live in a tent or car, especially in the cold fall and winter months. Get a sign and put up a tent on your property. Organized by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, with participation from several local churches and many individuals. Mon, Oct 28, 5:30 pm: Annual Ability Award celebration: "Honors those who persist in vision of communities where people with disabilities can participate, contribute, belong." Nika Maples, survivor of a lupus-induced stroke, will share humorous and heartfelt stories. Hosted by Disability Network/Lakeshore, includes meal. Mon, Oct 28, 7 pm: Big Read and Little Read Community Kick-off Event. A TED-talk-styled evening "to provide contexts for reading In the Time of Butterflies, Before We Were Free, and The Rooster Who Would Not Be Quiet." Hope College faculty Drs. Community Opportunities
Social Justice Awards: The City of Holland's Human Relations Commission (HRC) seeks nominations for the 2019 Social Justice Awards in the categories of Housing, Education, Employment, and Government/Community Relations. There's also a Student/Youth category for ages 13-19. Nominated individuals or organizations should "exemplify the virtues of social justice by promoting equal opportunity and access for all." Holland Area Arts Council, with Lakeshore Housing Alliance and United Way, is supporting National Homelessness Awareness Month by inviting people of all ages in Ottawa and surrounding counties to submit a sculpture "expressing what home (current, past, or imagined) feels like to them. Entries may be simple or complex, created by a group or made by a child or adult." Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) seeks volunteers for its youth programs, ¡Adelante! Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years); $40 for a nonprofit; $75 for a business.
In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. Our fiscal year is October 1 to September.
