Tues, Feb 15, 6 pm: "Voting Behaviors Among Muslim Americans," by Dr. Gamal Gasim of the political science faculty, Grand Valley State University.  At Pere Marquette 2201, Krikhof Center, GVSU, Allendale.

 

Wed, Feb 16, 7 pm: Spoken word artist Amir Sulaiman of Rochester, New York.  Sponsored by Muslim Students Association as part of Islamic Awareness Week.  At Pere Marquette 2201, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Thurs, Feb 17, 3 pm: "Unveiling the Truth: The Muslim Women," by Tahera Ahmad, the first Muslim female chaplain at Northwestern University. Sponsored by Muslim Students Association as part of Islamic Awareness Week.  At Grand River Room 2250, Kirkhof Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Fri, Feb 18, 7 pm: Arab American comedian Mohammed Amer, from "Allah Made Me Funny."  Sponsored by Muslim Students Association as part of Islamic Awareness Week.  At Loosemore Auditorium, Building E, Pew Campus of Grand Valley State University, Grand Rapids.

Tues, Feb 22, 7 pm to 8 pm: "Just for Parents Meeting" of information about Holland Public Schools" TWBI (Two-Way Bilingual Immersion) Spanish/English all-day, every day kindergarten program. Classes are 50 percent in Spanish and 50 percent in English, using the same curriculum as standard kindergarten. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY

On Saturday, May 21, Holland's International Relations Commission will hold the community's third annual festival "Celebrating Our Multicultural Connections."  The free family event, to be held this year in Kollen Park on Lake Macatawa, will have entertainment, ethnic food booths, and children's activities from 11 am to 4 pm.

 

If you are interested in performing a cultural piece (dance, martial arts, vocal/instrumental performance, storytelling, etc.; maximum of 30 minutes), providing a children's activity booth, or sponsoring part of the event, please contact Erin Nyholt at e.nyholt@cityofholland.com or call 355-1321 by Friday, March 18.

Reminder: ACEH program Friday night

Hi all,
 
We hope to see you at the Friday, February 11, meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, celebrating Black History Month with a program, "The Music and Meaning of Negro Spirituals," by local musicians Jauanna Jackson and Jeremy Simpson.  The event starts at 7 p.m. at the Center for Women in Transition, 411 Butternut, Holland (use entrance at back of building).  Everyone is welcome!

TONIGHT, Mon, Feb 7, and Tues, Feb 8, 7:30 pm: Additional screenings of Film, "Waste Land."  Artist Vik Muniz travels from Brooklyn to his native Brazil, where he photographs "catadores," self-designated pickers of recyclable materials at the world's largest garbage dump. He "reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives." Tickets, $6; seniors, $5. Unrated; 98 minutes.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Wed, Feb 9, 1 pm: 2nd annual Leonard F. Stoutemire Lecture in Multicultural Ministry: "Braiding Kinky Strands," by Dr. William Turner, Jr., associate professor of the Practice of Homiletics at Duke University.  His academic work focuses on the tradition of spirituality and preaching within the black church.  Sponsored by the Diversity Committee of Western Theological Seminary in conjunction with the Graduate Certificate of Urban Pastoral Ministry Program.  Lecture is named for the late Rev. Stoutemire, pioneer African American clergyman and church planter to Holland.  At Western Theological Seminary Semelink Hall, 101 E. 13th St, Holland.

Fri, Feb 11, 7 pm: General meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); public is invited.  Celebration of Black History Month, with interactive program on "Music and Meaning of Negro Spirituals," by musicians Jauanna Jackson of Park Township, a native of Inkster, and pianist Jeremy Simpson, music director of Sunshine Ministries Church, Grandville; he has also served churches in Holland and Muskegon. 396-2201.
