Fri, Jan 4, noon: Calvin College January Series: "Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide," by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and co-author of three best-selling books Sheryl Wu Dunn.  "Half the Sky" focuses on challenges facing women around the globe. Sun, Jan 20: First issue of "Nuestra Comunidad," is scheduled for  publication by the Holland Sentinel. The paper, entirely in Spanish, will be available at local markets, restaurants, and other locations and as an insert in the Holland Flashes South.

Mon, Jan 28, 6 to 9 pm: "Transforming Communities: An Introduction to Community Development," by Jay VanGroningen, Communities First Association, and Judy Van Dyke, Neighborhood Connections.  Co-hosted by Hope Church's Community Ministry and Good Samaritan's Neighborhood Connections.  A light meal will be served; no charge but contributions are welcome.  Registration required; call (616) 392-7947. Using facilitated dialogue and activities, a racially diverse group of participants will examine internalized, interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels of racial equity. $130 (includes breakfast, lunch, snack); some scholarships available. Penning. Dedicated to the memory of Gerry Crane, Byron Center music
instructor and last conductor of the West Michigan Gay and Lesbian
