Mon, Dec 1 through Sat, Dec 6, 7 pm and 9 pm:  Award-winning film, "Brick Lane": Nazneen's life is turned upside down at the tender age of seventeen. Forced into an arranged marriage to an older man, she exchanges her Bangladeshi village home for a block of flats in London's East End. In this new world, pining for her home and her sister, "she struggles to make sense of her existence - and to do her duty to her husband."  Rated PG-13.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 

 Dec 3, 7 pm: Informational meeting for ESL students about college registration and financial aid.  Open to anyone interested in improving his or her English-language skills or taking college classes.  Sponsored by Grand Rapids Community College and Holland Public Schools.  At GRCC Midtown Campus, 3rd floor conference room, corner of 15th St and Pine Ave, Holland.

 

Friday, Dec 5, 6 pm: Annual holiday potluck and cultural sharing party of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony.  Everyone is invited!  Please bring a dish to share, one from your own ethnic heritage if you can, and a nonperishable food item for local food banks. Sat, Dec 6, 9 am until 2 pm: Christmas Bazaar, sponsored by Lakeshore Latino Outreach Center to raise funds for its programs to serve those in need. Offering handcrafted knitted mittens, scarves, purses, and gloves; sterling silver jewelry; baked goods; Christmas ornaments.  At the Center offices, 345 East 16th Street (just east of Fairbanks), Suite 241, Holland.

 

Thurs, Dec 11, 6 pm until 8 pm (Registration Deadline is Friday, December 5): Neighborhood Holiday Celebration sponsored by Holland's Ourstreet Neighborhood Center and Chemical bank.  Event is free, but registration required; contact the Ourstreet program at 238 West 15th St, Holland, 355-3133, or any Chemical Bank branch; registrations may be faxed to (616) 393-0407. COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES

Holland Public Schools is offering  English classes for $10 a semester for residents in zip code 49423 who are at least 20 years old.  Includes 9 hours of class per week (three days), flexible schedules, four levels of English, computer lab for practice, certified teachers, state-approved curriculum.  Registration dates: Tues, Jan 6, 9 am to 3 pm; Thurs, Jan 8, 9 am to 3 pm; Tues, Jan 13, 1 pm to 7 pm—all at Washington School, 156 West 11th St, Holland.
