TONIGHT: Mon, Oct 19, through  Thurs, Oct 22, and again on Sat, Oct 24, 7:30 pm: Film, "The Class,"  follows a year in the life of a French high school teacher "in a tough neighborhood of Paris where cultures and attitudes often clash."  Winner of numerous awards.  $6 regular; $5 seniors.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8^th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Oct 20, 4 pm and 7 pm: One-hour film, "Up from the Bottoms: The Search for the American Dream,"  documents "migrations of African Americans from the rural South to the North during World War II and beyond."  Actress Cicely Tyson narrates; includes stories of 15 residents of Muskegon. At GVSU Cook-Dewitt Center, Allendale.

 

Sat, Oct 24: 5^th annual Native American Pow Wow, sponsored by the local Anishnabek Community, Hope College, and City of Holland, with the theme of "Honoring the Pink Shawl."  Grand Entry of drumming, dancing at 1 pm; host drum is Sons of the Three Fires.  Native American story-teller Larry Plamondon at 3 pm, sponsored by Holland Museum; vendors; food.  At DeVos Fieldhouse, between Fairbanks and Lincoln Ave and 8^th and 9^th Sts, Holland.

 

Mon, Oct 26, 7 pm: Presentation for Domestic Violence Awareness Month: "A Journey of Hope: Breaking the Cycle of Violence," book by local author Kim Douglas.  Sponsored by Center for Women in Transition, Hope College Women's Issues Organization, and the library. At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 28, noon:  Dr. Miguel De La Torre will speak about his new book, "Trails of Hope and Terror: Testimonies of Immigration."  Sponsored by Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON), a national United Methodist Church ministry of immigration legal services, education, and advocacy with programs in Grand Rapids and Holland.  Bring your own lunch or pre-order a boxed lunch ($6) from the library café (355-6250).  Books will be available for purchase; a portion of the proceeds goes to JFON-West Michigan.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Oct 29, 8 pm: S.L.I.C. EXHIBIT: Now through Fri, Oct 30, Mon-Fri, 10 am to 5 pm (until 7 pm on Fridays):  Exhibit, "Mystic India: Land of Color and Tradition: Folk Art and Miniature Paintings from Grand Valley State University"; 60 pieces of Indian art, focusing on stories and legends of India's cultures.  Free.  At  GVSU Art Gallery, Performing Arts Center, 1 Campus Dr, Allendale.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY:  Tutors are needed to help English-speaking adults with reading and writing skills,  Tutors meet 90 minutes a week with their student at a time and in a public place (library, church, etc.) they agree on.  Christ Memorial Church provides free materials and training, but previous teaching or tutoring experience is helpful.  For information or to sign up, contact Carol McGeehan at cmcgeeha@davenport.edu.
