Thurs., Mar 30, 4 pm: In celebration of César Chávez’s birthday (March 31), Joaquin and Julian Castro from San Antonio, TX, will speak on their experiences, and their admiration for Chávez.  Sponsored by Hope College student organization, La Raza Unida, and the Office of Multicultural Life.  Dessert reception follows.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia and 11th St., Holland.

 

Thurs., Mar 30, 7:30 pm: Cleve Jones, founder of the AIDS Memorial Quilt, talks about the quilt‘s origin “in the context of America’s history with the AIDS pandemic and as part of the global fight against HIV/AIDS.”  Free.  Hope Student Congress Speaker Series. Sat., Apr 1, 2 pm: First in a series of international films, "Vatel" (France, 2000); after the film Prof. Isabelle Chapuis-Alvarez of Hope College will speak about French food and culture.  Arranged by Chiaroscuro, a group of professors from several West Michigan colleges and universities whose aim is to promote cultural diversity and awareness through international films and round-table discussions for students and community members.  At Herrick District Library, River Ave between 12th and 13th Sts., Holland.

Tues., Mar 21, 1 pm, 9 pm (also Mar 26, 11 am and 11 pm; Mar 29, 2 pm, 10 pm): HBO film, “Walkout,” the story of the Chicano student uprising in East Los Angeles in 1968, which among other dramatic walkouts protested academic prejudices and school conditions. Directed by Edward James Olmos, from a story by Victor Villaseñor and starring Alexa Vega, Michael Pena.  “Walkout” is set against the backdrop of the 60s civil rights movement and worldwide youth protest.

Fri, Mar 24, 8 am to 1:30 pm: Grand Rapids Summit on Racism, “Shaping Our Future.” Special guest Bobby Moresco, co-writer/producer of Oscar-winning movie “Crash.” $30.  Register online at www.graceoffice.org/rji/
