Tues, May 3:  Don't forget to vote! There are school board elections in Holland and West Ottawa, and important millage renewals on the ballot.  ACEH member Magdalena Rivera is a candidate for Holland's school board.

 

Fri, May 6, noon-9 pm and Sat, May 7, 10 am to 9 pm:   ¡FIESTA!  ¡FIESTA MUNDIAL! The  46th annual cultural Fiesta sponsored by Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP): Theme is Fiesta Mundial (World Party).  Event will include entertainment and culture from several parts of the world, in addition to Latino entertainment forms.  Title sponsor is the Community Foundation of the Holland/Zeeland Area.  Schedule will be posted on LAUP's website www.laup.org and in the May 5 edition of the Holland Sentinel.  At Holland Civic Center, 150 W. 8th St, Holland.

Tues, May 17, 11:30 am: Film: "Tony and Janina's American Wedding," which tells the story of a Polish American couple who marry in Chicago; he is a U.S. citizen and she was undocumented.  The film depicts her deportation and his attempts to bring her back to the U.S. "through the red tape of the current immigration system."  Sponsored by Immigration Rights Alliance MI, with participation by Justice for Our Neighbors West Michigan (Grand Rapids and Holland).  The film's director will be available to answer questions.  Free, open to all.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland. 

 

            Sat, May 21, 11 am until 4 pm: Celebration of Multicultural Connections, sponsored by Holland's International Relations Commission.  Performances, family activities, information booths, ethnic foods for purchase,  and more.  Free.  At Kollen Park on Lake Macatawa, Van Raalte Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 

 

 

SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY

The Asian American Government Executives Network (AAGEN) is offering four one-time scholarships to college students preparing for leadership positions in federal, state and local governments.  Applications are due May 15, 2011; application form is at www.aagen.org

 

SPANISH LANGUAGE CAMPS

The Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance is holding two Spanish-language-learning camps:

·         Beginner's Spanish, 4-day intensive camp from June 20-24, 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm, including dinner.  Holland location to be announced. www.ethnicdiversity.org

·         Advanced Spanish, 4-week small group (maximum of 5 students): Wednesdays, July 13-August 3, 6 pm to 8 pm.  At Macatawa Resource Center, 665 136th Ave, Holland.
