TODAY, Mon, Jan 16, 10 am until 2 pm: Grand opening of The Center of African American Art and History (CAAAH) (the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr).  Features gallery, exhibits and commemorations of history-making events.  $5 fee for grand opening.  The CAAAH also seeks charter members at various contribution levels. TODAY, Mon, Jan 16, 11 am:  Dr. King Celebration and Commemoration Peace March; introduction by Kim Harris; film excerpt of "I Have a Dream" speech; African American National Anthem; march around campus. TODAY, Mon, Jan 16, 12:30 pm: Calvin College January series: "Mobilizing Hope: Faith-inspired Activism for a Post-Civil Rights Generation," by Adam Taylor, author of "Mobilizing Hope," lessons from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and other social movements.  Video presentation at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd, Holland.

 

TONIGHT, Mon, Jan 16, 5:30 pm (candlelight march); 6 pm (memorial service): Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight March and Memorial Service: "Breaking the Silence" keynote address by Pastor E. Wayne Coleman; music, litany, poetry.  A community potluck follows;  bring a cultural dish to share. TONIGHT, Mon, Jan 16, 6:30 pm: Documentary, "Little Rock Central High: 50 Years Later," and dialogue around issues of injustice and racial inequality.  Sponsored by Heights of Hope community organization.  At Calvary Reformed Church, 995 East 8th St, Holland.

Wed, Jan 18, 11 am: Civil Rights Commemorative March honoring individuals and groups that have worked to advance civil rights and social justice.  On Hope College campus, starting at the anchor at Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Jan 18, 7 pm:  Presentation of 2011 Social Justice Awards by Holland Human Relations Commission and City Council to Holland is Ready, Ourstreet/Neighborhood Liaison Programs, and Ready for School Initiative; Youth Award to Timmy Kim; first Distinguished Community Service Award to Rebecca "Becky" Arenas.  At City Hall, 270 S River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Jan 19, 12:30 pm: Calvin College January Series: "The Future of the New Middle East," by Reza Aslan, Iranian-born scholar, author, and professor.  Video presentation at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Rd, Holland.

 

Fri, Jan 20, 7 pm:  Program, Journey to Acceptance, by Holland/Lakeshore PFLAG, illustrating the phases LGBT persons and their families often go through as they move from awareness to coming out to acceptance and activism.  All are welcome; bring a snack to share.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY:  Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) Steps to Success Program, Winter 2012.  Adult education classes, all are bilingual. English as a Second Language, 12 weeks starting Mon, Jan 23, 3 evenings a week; GED Preparation, Wed, Jan 25, 5 to 8 pm; Computer Training, 6-week beginner and intermediate sessions, once a week, starting Jan 23 and 24.
