alumni: Celebration of Black History Month and the 45th anniversary of
the Black Student Union at Hope College. Presented by BSU and Office

Curtis Smith, GVSU professor of Chinese. Part of 2013 Asian Pacific

Wed, Feb 27, noon: "Asian American and Pacific Islander Women in Higher
Education," by Connie Dang, director of the GVSU Office of
Multicultural Affairs, and Shaily Menon, associate dean of liberal arts

Wed, Feb 27, 4:30 pm: "Freedom, Slavery and the Underground Railroad in
Michigan," presented by Veta Tucker, associate professor of English at
Grand Valley State University; includes history of abolition in the
state and the secret network that assisted people who were held in
slavery in Michigan and who escaped slavery in the South. At Loosemore
Auditorium, Pew Grand Rapids campus, GVSU.

Thurs, Feb 28, 6:30 pm to 8 pm: "Bullying: What Parents Need to Know
and How to Stop It."
Presentation by a school counselor and school liaison office, including
introduction to bullying, signs that your child might be bullied or is
a bully, cyber safety, sexting, and the role of parents. Parents are
encouraged to bring a wireless/mobile device for demonstration

RACIAL EQUITY INSTITUTES
March 7-8, 8 am to 4:30 pm: Two-day Racial Equity Institute, an
educational and interactive program of "learning, sharing, and
processing through a racially diverse group" using facilitated
dialogues and activities to examine the "internalized, interpersonal,
institutional, and structural levels of racial equity." $130 per
person, includes light breakfast, lunch, refreshments; financial
hardship scholarships available by request. Register online at

The Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance offers 10 weeks of instruction
in Spanish for beginners (Tues, Apr 9 - June 11, 9 am to 11 am) and
intermediate learners (Thurs, Apr 11-June 13, 6 pm to 8 pm).
$100 and purchase of book; some scholarships available. Registration
