Mon, Feb 29, 4 pm to 5 pm: 2016 Black History Month Lecture: "Tragedy & Triumph: Two Comeback Tales after Stolen Innocence." Keynote speakers Duane Loynes and Ericka Loynes will present "stories of voices of resilience that rose up in the face of tragedy." Free, open to the public. Sponsored by Hope College Office of Multicultural Education and GROW. At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Thurs, March 3, 7 pm: Poets Tarfia Faizullah and Jamaal May read from their acclaimed works as part of the Jack Ridl Visiting Writers Series at Hope College. Faizullah is Bangladeshi-American; May is a native of Detroit. At Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.
Tues, March 8, 7 pm: "Welcoming Refugees: Do Unto Others." Event to promote a welcoming community for refugees; info on local refugee programs; stories from refugees about resettlement in West Michigan. Hosted by city of Grand Rapids, Bethany Christian Services, Michigan Office for New Americans, Lutheran Social Services, and other groups. Free. Fri, March 11: End of Early Bird Registration for FORUM 16: The Conference on Racial Equity: "Identity & Bias: Impact on Individuals and Institutions." Plenary speaker is Touré. Discounted rate of $60 ends today; cost is $75 afterwards. FORUM 16 takes place 9 am to 4 pm, Thurs, April 21, at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids. Tues, March 15, 7 pm: Does Race Matter? Second in three-part series of discussions about race in the United States and West Michigan; led by Rev. Community Opportunity
4-H Cultural Competency series: 4-H and Herrick District Library are partnering to offer summer activities to build cultural competency in elementary-age youth. They are looking for adults and older teens to help children learn more about aspects of different cultures. Meetings will be Thursday afternoons in June or July, and will offer cultural activities in the categories of food, music, art, holidays, dances, or traditional dress/clothing.
