Thanks to everyone who turned out for the ACEH “Heart to Heart Community Celebration” on Friday, February 5, and enjoyed fun, fellowship, food, beautiful performances, and the silent auction and raffle. Thank you to businesses and individuals who donated goods and services to the auction. Sat, Feb 13, 2 pm to 5 pm: Film, “Race to Freedom.”  Presented for Black History Month by the African American Awareness and Development Organization (AAADO); panel discussion follows.  Refreshments.  (Subsequent film will be Feb 27 “Amistad.”)  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Mon, Feb 15, 7 pm: “Does Race Matter?” with social justice advocate Calvin Terrell, on how communities can better practice diversity, equity, and justice building.  Hosted by the city of Holland, Herrick District Library, and GVSU Meijer campus.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

Fri, Feb 19, support group, 7 pm; program, 8:10 pm:  PFLAG meeting with presentation on youth suicide prevention; a therapist from Tri-Cities Ministries Counseling will discuss signs of depression, clues to knowing whether someone is suicidal, and what to do if a family member or friend is suicidal.  Trans group meets at 6 pm.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Fri, Feb 19, noon to 2 pm: “The Historical Foundations of Structural Racism” by Dr. Vanessa Holden, author and assistant professor of African American and American History at Michigan State University. Scholarships

Community Choice Foundation:  High school students graduating in 2016 who will attend a two-year or four-year program at a Michigan college or university are encouraged to apply.  Scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded for “outstanding academic achievement, involvement in extra-curricular activities, and dedication to community service.” A program of Community Choice Credit Union. Haworth Diversity Scholarship with Paid Internship:  The Diversity Scholarship offers $2,000 and opportunity for a 12-week, paid internship (40 hrs/wk) with Haworth.  Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate college or university with sophomore or junior status, and be a member of one of the minority groups listed on the application.  Deadline is Feb 17, 2016.  http://cfhz.org/

Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35 for two years); $30 per year for a couple or family ($50 for two years; $40 annually for a nonprofit; and $75 per year for a business.  In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, contributing volunteer time to the group.  ACEH is a 501c3 organization.
