 Through Sat, June 3, 7:30 pm:  Film, "Nise: The Heart of Madness"; based on the life of Nise de Silveira and her work in the 1940s at a Rio de Janeiro psychiatric hospital "where she overcame prejudices…to demand and develop humane ways of dealing with the mentally ill."  Award-winning production; not rated; in Portuguese with English subtitles.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Tues, June 6, 7:30 am to 11 am:  Fourth annual Ottawa Housing Next: Community Conversation.  Hosted by Greater Ottawa County United Way and Lakeshore Housing Alliance.  Discussions on increasing affordable housing.  For more info or to register, go to www.bit.ly/2rJqPeY  At Baker Lofts, 217 East 24th St, Holland.

 Thurs, June 8, 7 pm:  Film, "I Am Not Your Negro."  "View an adaptation of the revolutionary unfinished manuscript of James Baldwin, recounting the lives and assassinations of three of his close friends: Medgar Evers, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr."  Tickets $7.  (269) 857-2399.  At Saugatuck Center for the Arts, 400 Culver St, Saugatuck.

 Sat, June 10, all day: Inaugural Grand Rapids Asian Festival.  Free, open to everyone. Showcasing Asian cultures, food, arts, music; includes workshops, interactive dance, drumming, martial arts, karaoke contest.  Interactive kids' area.  Beer tent; local and Asian beers.  A portion of event's proceeds will go to West Michigan Asian American Association scholarships and to Kids' Food Basket.  At Rosa Parks Circle, downtown Grand Rapids.

 Wed, June 21, 2 pm:  Fair Housing Training for landlords in City of Holland. Class on fair housing and "best practices on topics such as receiving and addressing requests for service/assistance animals, and HUD's guidance on the use of criminal records in housing-related transactions."  Registration required.  Community Opportunities

Free parenting classes:  Escape Ministries is offering free, fun, and informative Nurturing Parents classes for 10 weeks on Wednesdays beginning June 14 and ending August 23; each class runs from 4 pm to 6 pm and will include pizza for participants.  Topics include discipline, communication, child development, and problem-solving.   A certificate of completion will be presented.  Language survey:  The Holland Human Relations Commission is interested in making a connection with persons who are bilingual in both English and any of the following languages: Kinyarwanda, French, Tigrinya, Farsi, Pashto, Arabic, Falam, or Burmese.  Please contact Esther Fifelski at hrc@cityofholland.com or call (616) 355-1322.

 Citizenship classes:  Escape Ministries is hosting 10 weeks of citizenship classes; participants will prepare for the civics/history exam, practicing English, and get help with their applications to become naturalized U.S. citizens.  Classes are Tuesday mornings (10:30 am to noon) beginning Aug. 1; the application legal clinic will be Saturday, Sept 30.  Call (616) 396-4481 to enroll.
