 The ACEH Board of Directors wishes happy holidays to our members and friends.   "In the Community" will return the first week of January 2019.

Sun, Dec 16, 4 pm to 7 pm:  Kwanzaa celebration.  Includes gathering around Nguzo Saba, the 7 basic principles of traditional African values of family, community responsibility, commerce, and self-improvement: Umoja (unity); Kujichagulia (self-determination); Ujima (collective work and responsibility); Ujamaa, cooperative economics; Nia (purpose); Kuumba (creativity); and Imani (faith).  Event will include West Michigan Jewels of Africa presenting African drumming, dancing, and cultural lessons.  There will also be children's activities, African fashion exhibition, local vendors. Dessert reception follows.  Hosted by Maple Avenue Ministries, Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion, and ACEH.  At Hope College Maas Center, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 Mon, Dec 17, 6 pm:  Documentary film: "Black Man," by Jon Wesley Covington, produced by Muskegon Museum of Art.  Free.  In their own words, film chronicles the experiences, past and present, of 32 local African American men, ages 18-94, of all occupations and experiences.  (231) 722-9750.  At Frauenthal Center, 425 West Western, #200, Muskegon.

 Fri, Dec 21, 7 pm business/support; 7:50 pm Holiday Time & refreshments, followed by program: PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore meeting. Presentation about Covenant House in Grand Rapids, West Michigan's first shelter for homeless and trafficked youth; includes various resources for youth ages 18-24.  Gender SAFE meets at 6 pm.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 Wed, Jan 9, 7 pm:  Holland Interfaith Allies "Know Your Neighbors" series:  Members of the Baha'i community will speak about their experience of living in West Michigan.  (Previous panels have spoken from Muslim, NONE, Hindu, and Jewish perspectives.) Free, open to the public.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Sat, Jan 12, 9 am to 11:30 am: : "Coffee with City Council."  Informal and open forum to share suggestions, concerns, comments with members of Holland City Council and city appointed officials as they began to prepare the Fiscal Year 2020 budget for the city.  At Civic Center Place, 150 West 8th St, Holland.

Thurs, Dec 13, through Mar 10, 2019: "SONS: Seeing the Modern African American Male.  More than 80 photographs of Muskegon men, selected by a committee of their peers and representing "a broad array of backgrounds, professions, and socioeconomic status." Photography and video are used "to mimic the process of prejudging people…and reconciling prejudgments with realities."  At Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 West Webster Ave, Muskegon.

 Community Opportunity

Poster contest announced for first annual International Festival of Holland (August 17, 2019).  City of Holland and Holland Area Arts Council seek submissions from artists for an image to be used on a poster and other marketing (no text).  Tues, Nov 20, 7 pm:  Transgender Day of Remembrance.  Candlelight vigil to honor lives of "those lost to anti-transgender violence" in 2018.  ACEH is among the co-hosts. At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.
