Sat, June 8, 10 am to 2 pm: Herrick Fest: Family-friendly celebration of "learning, the library, and the community" hosted by Herrick District Library, with 30 stations of fun offered by nonprofit groups, including ACEH. Sun, June 9, 1 pm to 6 pm: Who Are The Hmong. Presented by Bangkok Taste Cuisine in honor of the Grand Rapids Asian Festival: learn where the Hmong came from and their history; special guest speaker Calvin Yang a.k.a. Dictumdose. Sat, June 15, noon to 6 pm: Freedom Family Festival. Celebrating the culture, accomplishments, diversity of the African diaspora. Marks 400th anniversary of chattel slavery in the US and 154th anniversary of its end (Juneteenth). Fine foods, entertainment, children's activities, fascinating culture, awarding of cash prizes for two outstanding graduates. ACEH will have information and activities. Friday, June 21, 7 pm support meeting, 8 pm film: Documentary film "Stonewall Uprising," about the 1969 Stonewall Riots, which started the gay rights movement. Hosted by Holland/Lakeshore PFLAG. Gender SAFE (Supporting All For Equality) meets at 6 pm. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.
Fri, June 21, 7 pm- 11 pm: Live entertainment as part of annual Holland PRIDE Festival (Funny Girls, Mimi Gonzalez, Delilah DeWylde). At Park Theater, River Ave across from Centennial Park, Holland.
Sat, June 22, noon to 5 pm: Holland PRIDE Festival, hosted by Out On The Lakeshore outonthelakeshore@gmail.com. Volunteers needed at Community Action House: Want to lend a hand and some of your time to one of Holland's best agencies? Various positions are available at Community Action House, Community Kitchen, the general store, food pantry, and garden, including: greeters, donation van drivers, gardeners, thrift shop cashier, donation processors and sorters. Youth Opportunities
Two summer programs for youth, focusing on justice and on peace, will open in June.
--Future Leaders for Justice is for middle and high school students "who want to be woke and stay awake," the organizers say, by exploring issues of justice and race and building advocacy skills. The free program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, Tues, June 18, through Thurs, June 20, at Hope Church, 77 West 11th Street, Holland. It's sponsored by Faith Leaders for Justice, a collaboration of local leaders from a variety of faith backgrounds and worldviews working for justice in this area. --Peace Camp is for youth entering second grade to eighth grade. Children learn that "peace begins with them." They cooperate in games and projects, learn to deal with their conflicts in a peaceful manner, and come up with creative solutions to problems they see at camp, at home, at school, or in the world. Cost is $100 for the first camper, $75 for each additional immediate family member; scholarships available. The camp will run from 9 am to 3 pm, Mon, June 24, through Fri, June 28, at Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Avenue, Holland. It's a collaborative effort of local churches and organizations. Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years);
$30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years);
$40 for a nonprofit; $75 for a business.
In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. Our fiscal year is October 1 to September 30.
