 It's here again:  Daylight Saving Time starts Sunday, March 8.  Spring forward and move non-automated clocks ahead one hour.  (The rest will do that on their own!)

 Sat, March 7, 10 am:  2nd annual Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings.  Hosted by Gender SAFE (Supporting All For Equality), program will feature new stories about transgender and non-binary youth, a craft and song, a collection of books, and a reading list to take home.  Gender SAFE leaders will be on hand to answer questions and share informational resources.  In main floor meeting room, Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Tues, March 10, 7 am to 8 pm:  Polls open to vote in Michigan's Presidential Primary.  Other issues also will be on the ballot in some area locations.

 Wed, March 11, 4:30 to 6:30 pm:  Community Connections. Open house at which some 45 local nonprofits (including ACEH) will showcase services and help attendees connect with short- and long-term volunteer opportunities. Hosts: MI West Coast Chamber of Commerce and Lakeshore Nonprofit Alliance.  Wed, March 11, 6 pm:  Documentary film: "True Justice: Bryan Stevenson's Fight for Equality." Attorney Stevenson is founder/executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative. This HBO documentary focuses on his personal story and those of his clients and "a history of injustice and complicity by the U.S. justice system, revealing how a narrative of racial inequality emerged in this country." (A dramatization of his work, "Just Mercy," was shown in Jan-Feb at the AMC Star 8 Theater in Holland.)  Co-hosted by HOSA (Holland Openly Secular Alliance), and ACEH. Free; open to all; pizza and refreshments served.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 Sat, March 14, noon:  St. Patrick's Day Parade: Travels east on 8th Street from the Civic Center to 8th Street between College and Columbia Aves. Irish dancers, bagpipers; families wearing green are invited to carry Irish flags in the parade.

 Sun, March 15, 1 pm to 2:30 pm: "Conversation on Race: America and the Church--Empowering Leaders of Color to Lead in the Church and Beyond."  Panel discussion with Rev. Bernard "Chris" Dorsey, Juanita Bocanegra, Raul Garcia.  Free; open to public. At BLVD Church, 238 West 15th St, Holland.

 Mon, March 16, 6:30 pm:  Town Hall Meeting on Mental Illness: Before Prison, In Prison, After Prison.  Panelists represent returning citizens, family members, prisoner support groups, mental health, courts, and law enforcement.  Hosted by Momentum Center, governments, schools, health systems.  At Grand Haven Community Center, 421 Columbus, Grand Haven.

 Fri, March 20, 7 pm (business meeting; support group) 8:10 pm (program): PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore meeting. Out On The Lakeshore director Jeffrey Sorensen will speak about efforts to add LGBTQ people to the list of those protected by Holland's anti-discrimination ordinance. Gender SAFE (Supporting All for Equality) meets from 6 to 8 pm.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 Wed, March 25, 5 pm: Annual César Chávez Lecture: Migrant Workers' Tale, Chávez and Huerta's Legacy of Courage and Persistence, by Lorna Hernandez Jarvis, associate vice president of diversity, equity, and inclusion, Whitworth University, Spokane WA. She will focus on the history and plight of migrant workers, their struggle for equality, and their search for justice through the leadership of Chávez and Dolores Huerta, including "what has America learned as the nation continues to struggle with welcoming immigrants and providing justice for farmworkers and the poor." Dr. Jarvis was a member of Hope College psychology faculty, 1993-2017.  Co-sponsored by Center for Diversity and Inclusion, Latino Student Organization, GROW.  At BSC Auditorium, Bultman Student Center, 141 East 12th St, Holland.

 "All That Jazz: A Historic Idlewild Experience!"

Come for great live music and a program about the Michigan town of Idlewild where outstanding black entertainers performed when they were shut out of other venues in the state and nation.  Come for fellowship, wonderful food, family activities. Come for the silent auction of goods and services, our chief fundraiser to support scholarships and ACEH work in the community. Everyone is welcome!  Please bring a dish to share from your family's heritage and a nonperishable item for a local food bank.

U. S. Census Information

ONLINE: Census recommends going to 2020census.gov to access the online questionnaire.  When the time comes to self-respond, there will be a huge button that reads "RESPOND NOW" that will take users to the on-line form. We want them to go to 2020census.gov because there is so much more information, including the language guides, which will also be prominently showcased.

Election Inspectors Needed!  2020 will be an especially busy election year, including a Presidential Primary on March 10, a General Primary on August 4 and the General Election on November 3. The City of Holland is looking for Election Inspectors (the workers at the polls) for the August and November dates and continuing into the following years; you are paid for hours worked.
