Fri, Sept 18, 10 am to 4 pm: Free COVID-19 testing at drive-thru site; no screening and no appointment needed. Diagnostic testing for anyone age 5 and older with or without symptoms (parental/guardian consent required for minors). Bring a government-issued ID or paperwork that has your name and address (bill, mail, pay stub). Also available, same hours, on Sept 25 and Oct 2. Sites operated by National Guard, Medical Reserve Corps, and Ottawa Co. employees. At Holland Charter Township Fire Department Station #2, 12169 James St, Holland. (See also Tues, Sept 29, below.)
Fri, Sept 18, 7 pm: PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore virtual meeting to discuss voting in the Nov 3 election, including voter registration, absentee voting/voting by mail, voting early, and voting on Election Day. Mon, Sept 21, 6 pm to 8 pm: LGBTQIA+ Community Learning 101. Interactive virtual training to "explore concepts of gender, sex, and sexual orientation; learn about systems of oppression impacting LGBTQIA+ people; gain practical strategies to create more inclusive spaces." Presented by Dr. Maria Wick (she, her, hers), associate director, Milton E. Ford LGBT Resource Center, GVSU. Mon, Sept 21 - Sat, Sept 26: Grand Haven Hispanic Heritage Fiesta, by Tri-Cities Puentes Initiative and 4 others "to build bridges and cultural understanding through the celebration of the Hispanic and Latinx community in the Tri-Cities area." Week will include Hispanic Heritage restaurant week, food truck weekend, film festival, virtual mercado, and virtual dance night. Exhibits
Today through Thurs, Oct 15: Virtual exhibit "Luis Sahagun: Lo Que Grita Mi Piel" ("That Which My Skin Screams") explores race through alternative Latinx narratives. Sahagun was born in Guadalajara in 1982; brought to the U.S. as a child; and naturalized in 1995 under President Reagan's Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. He has participated in multiple invitational and national exhibits, worked as a teaching artist, and is currently artist-in-residence/visiting professor for Critical Race Studies at Michigan State Univ. It is ala a celebration of Black culture and the many ways that Black culture has enriched American life over the past two centuries." Community Action House: Latinx and Asian Cuisine Boxes Needed
Community Action House has provided over 240,000 meals in Family Food Boxes during the pandemic, food that's been purchased and packed by individuals, families, small groups. CAH offers 3 types of boxes: Basic, Latinx, and Asian -- the latter two with culturally appropriate foods. Right now, CAH needs more Latinx and Asian Cuisine Boxes.
