Sat, Oct 24: 5^th annual Native American Pow Wow, sponsored by the local Anishnabek Community, Hope College, and the City of Holland.  Grand Entry of drumming, dancing at 1 pm; Native American story-teller Larry Plamondon at 3 pm, sponsored by Holland Museum; vendors; food.  At DeVos Fieldhouse, Hope campus, Lincoln Ave and 9^th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Oct 28, noon:  Dr. Miguel De La Torre will speak about his new book, "Trails of Hope and Terror: Testimonies of Immigration."  Sponsored by Justice for Our Neighbors (JFON), a national United Methodist Church ministry of immigration legal services, education, and advocacy with programs in Grand Rapids and Holland.  People attending may bring a brown bag lunch or pre-order a boxed lunch ($6) from the library café (355-6250). Copies of the book will be available for purchase, with a portion of the proceeds going to JFON-West Michigan.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, 300 South River, Holland.

 

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY:  Tutors are needed to help English-speaking adults with reading and writing skills,  Tutors meet 90 minutes a week with their student at a time and in a public place (library, church, etc.) they agree on.  Christ Memorial Church provides free materials and training, but previous teaching or tutoring experience is helpful.  For information or to sign up, contact Carol McGeehan at cmcgeeha@davenport.edu.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CALLING ALL COLORS!

 Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance (LEDA) has an urgent need for 5 more volunteers to facilitate at its Calling All Colors high school conference, 9 am to 11 am, on Tuesday, Oct. 20.  Training for volunteers is Oct. 13 from 5 to 6 pm at Macatawa Resource Center, 665 136th Ave, Holland, OR on Oct 15 from 3 to 4 pm at White Pines Middle School, Grand Haven.  For information, or to sign up as a volunteer, contact Raechel at admin@ethnicdiversity.org or call (616) 846-9074.

ESL CLASSES:  Do you want to brush up on your English language skills, or know someone who does?  Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) offers English as a Second Language classes three times a week (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday) from 6:30 to 8:30 pm.  A donation of $10 is requested but not required to enroll.  Registration IS required, by calling LAUP at (616) 392-5058.  Classes are held at the Martha Miller Center, 257 Columbia (corner of Columbia and 10^th St), Holland.
