TONIGHT, Mon, Feb 1, 7 pm:  "Becoming the Beloved Community in America's New Racial Times: Lessons from 30 Years in the Trenches," by Chris Rice, director of the Duke Center for Reconciliation.  Part of Belhar Confession events sponsored by several organizations at Hope College.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Feb 3, noon: Great Decisions Series: "China Rising: A New Paradigm for U.S. Foreign Policy," with Dr. Glenda Quarnstrom, adjunct professor of Asian studies at Grand Valley State University.  Free light luncheon included.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Feb 4, 4 pm: Performance, "The African American Experience," by the student theatre troupe Act on Racism.  Includes live skits on the African American experience, from slavery to present day.  Free.  At Cook-DeWitt Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Thurs, Feb 4, 6 pm: Celebrate Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Laotian New Year with Year of the Tiger event.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Feb 5, 6 pm: First event in 2010 Leonard F. Stoutemire Lecture Series in African American Religious History: Presentations by Rev. Eric Williams, 2010 Faculty Fellow in Theology and Homiletics at Western Seminary, "Historicizing and Contextualizing African American Religious Thought," and Rev. Wayne Coleman, "Surviving Race and Place in My Black Face: C. Eric Lincoln."  Next events on Feb 19 and 26.  At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th St, Holland.

 

Sat, Feb 6, 9 am until 5 pm: DTE Ethnic Heritage Festival of music, dance, crafts, and displays of various ethnic groups that call West Michigan home. Free admission to the museum.  Food available for purchase; visitors over age 21 may sample beers from around the world (1 to 4 pm); showcase of traditional and modern fashions at 12:30 pm; planetarium show "Everybody's Sky: Star Stories from Around the World," at 11 am and 1, 2 and 4 pm.  www.grmuseum.org.  (616) 456-3977. Fri, Feb 12, 7 pm: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony meeting, open to all. Video, "Justice for All," the story of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American on the U.S. Supreme Court, with local speakers Dr. Fred Johnson III, associate professor of history at Hope College, and Ruth Coleman, director of the Center of African American Art and History in Holland.  For meeting info, call 396-2201.  At the Center, 21 West 16th St, Holland (just east of intersection of River Ave and 16th St).

Tues, Jan 26, 5 pm: "Love, Hope, & Act on Racism," performance by Act on Racism (AOR), a Grand Valley State University student-oriented anti-racism theatre troupe.  At Grand River Room, Kirkhof Center, GVSU campus, Allendale.

Wed, Jan 27, 4 pm: Documentary, speaker, and discussion: "Surviving Auschwitz: Children of the Shoah" and Auschwitz survivor Tova Friedman.  Date is designated by the UN General Assembly as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.  Reception at 5:30 pm.  At Maas Center, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

Mon, Feb 1, 7 pm: Keynote presentation of Belhar events on Hope College campus:

Prof. Chris Rice, co-director of the Center for Reconciliation of Duke Divinity School, will speak on "Becoming the Beloved Community in America's New Racial Time: Lessons from 30 Years in the Trenches."  He lived for 20 years in an intentionally interracial community in Jackson, Mississippi, and is author of "More than Equals,"  "Grace Matters," and "Reconciling All Things."  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

          NOTE: Rice also will speak at the 10:30 a.m. chapel service at Dimnent Memorial Chapel (College Ave. and 12th St) and lead a discussion from 11 to noon with pastors and congregational leaders on ways churches can promote racial reconciliation (Room B12 in basement of Dimnent).  The Belhar Confession is a Christian creed, ecumenical in scope, that emerged from the opposition to South African apartheid in the 1980s and is being considered for adoption by a number of Reformed Church bodies.  For more information, contact Dr. Charles Green at green@hope.edu or 395-7725.

The invitation sent to you for the City of Holland Housing Task Force Presentation on January 19th was intended to be extended to City committees related to housing and neighborhood policy for their first review of the City of Holland Neighborhood Improvement Strategy. If you are not a member of one of the following City committees related to housing and neighborhood policy listed in the invitation, you are welcome to attend the meeting for informational purposes but may not be able to participate in the roundtable discussion at this particular meeting. You will be advised of any future meetings for public input. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused.
