TONIGHT, Mon, Feb 1, 7 pm:  "Becoming the Beloved Community in America's New Racial Times: Lessons from 30 Years in the Trenches," by Chris Rice, director of the Duke Center for Reconciliation.  Part of Belhar Confession events sponsored by several organizations at Hope College.  At Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Feb 3, noon: Great Decisions Series: "China Rising: A New Paradigm for U.S. Foreign Policy," with Dr. Glenda Quarnstrom, adjunct professor of Asian studies at Grand Valley State University.  Free light luncheon included.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

Thurs, Feb 4, 4 pm: Performance, "The African American Experience," by the student theatre troupe Act on Racism.  Includes live skits on the African American experience, from slavery to present day.  Free.  At Cook-DeWitt Center, Grand Valley State University, Allendale.

 

Thurs, Feb 4, 6 pm: Celebrate Cambodian, Vietnamese, and Laotian New Year with Year of the Tiger event.  At Holland Area Arts Council, 150 East 8th St, Holland.

 

Fri, Feb 5, 6 pm: First event in 2010 Leonard F. Stoutemire Lecture Series in African American Religious History: Presentations by Rev. Eric Williams, 2010 Faculty Fellow in Theology and Homiletics at Western Seminary, "Historicizing and Contextualizing African American Religious Thought," and Rev. Wayne Coleman, "Surviving Race and Place in My Black Face: C. Eric Lincoln."  Next events on Feb 19 and 26.  At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th St, Holland.

 

Sat, Feb 6, 9 am until 5 pm: DTE Ethnic Heritage Festival of music, dance, crafts, and displays of various ethnic groups that call West Michigan home. Fri, Feb 12, 7 pm: Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony meeting, open to all. Video, "Justice for All," the story of Thurgood Marshall, the first African American on the U.S. Supreme Court, with local speakers Dr. Fred Johnson III, associate professor of history at Hope College, and Ruth Coleman, director of the Center of African American Art and History in Holland.  For meeting info, call 396-2201.  At the Center, 21 West 16th St, Holland (just east of intersection of River Ave and 16th St).
