COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITY

 

A youth dance group from the state of Hidalgo, Mexico, is coming to Holland to perform at Fiesta May 5.  The 13 teens, accompanied by 3 adults, need places to stay and some meals during the week they will be in town, May 3 -9.  (They do not need to all stay together at one location.) The Holland Area Chamber of Commerce is accepting applications for the 2012 Lakeshore ATHENA Scholarship Program. Scholarship requirements:

--for women age 30 and older in Ottawa, Allegan, or Muskegon counties

--will attend a West Michigan-area accredited school (4-year, 2-year, technical, or vocational)

--have limited financial resources

--want to pursue a professional, business, or entrepreneurial career

Scholarship can be used for tuition and other expenses needed to attend classes (child care, housing, transportation).  Applications are available at Holland Area Chamber of Commerce, 272 East 8th St, Holland. EXHIBITS

·          Through Fri, Mar 30:  Display honoring César Chávez, presented in a Mexican altar theme and prepared by La Raza Unida of Hope College.  The altar is a traditional way to commemorate the life and legacy of a person; Chávez played a leading role in the 1960s by organizing the nation's migrant farm workers.

 

·          Through Mon, Apr 2, 9 am to 5 pm: Freedom Riders, a traveling exhibit that documents the story of the 1961 Freedom Riders, a pivotal event in the civil rights movement.   Includes photos, newspaper clippings, and audio accounts of eyewitnesses.  At Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library and Museum, Grand Rapids.
