Tues, Sept 23:  National Register to Vote Day.  October 4 is the last day to register to vote in the November 4 mid-term elections for Michigan governor, senator, representatives in Congress, and local offices.  Contact your city hall or county clerk's office.

 

Tues, Sept 23, 11 am to 11 pm: Fundraiser for CASA, a Hope College program that helps at-risk children make stronger progress in school.  10 percent of Orange Leaf profits on sales of frozen yogurt that day will be donated to CASA.  At Orange Leaf, 184 South River (just north of 8th St), Holland.

 

Tues, Sept 23, 4 pm: La Pause-Café.  Informal gathering of people who wish to chat in French with others; all levels of French are welcome.  Café meets every Tuesday.  At Lemonjello's Coffee Shop, 61 East 9^th St, Holland.

 

Tues, Sept 23, 7 pm: Documentary, "Where There is Despair, Let Me Sow Hope," "transports you to developing countries to see what it would be like to live on $2 a day with no modern conveniences"; Q&A with Mary Dailey Brown, founder of SowHope International, which works to promote peace, protect children, and prevent trafficking.  Free; co-sponsored by Lakeshore Women for Peace and other groups, including ACEH.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. Tues, Sept 23, 7 pm:  Film, "Fruitvale Station," and discussion "Caring About Michael Brown Jr.: What are the Issues?  What Are the Inequities?"  Sponsored by Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance's Diversity Initiative of Northwest Ottawa County and Goodrich Quality Theaters.  Registration required, at www.ethnicdiversity.org  At Grand Haven 9 theater, 17220 Hayes St, Grand Haven.

Thurs, Sept 25, noon to 1 pm: Documentary film: "The State of Arizona": "Tracking the year after Arizona passed SB1070, its controversial 'papers please' law, film tells stories of people in Arizona on all sides of the issue and depicts a state and its people testing the edges of our democratic values."  Discussion follows. Sun, Sept 28, 3 pm to 6 pm:  Beal Memorial Celebration: "Following Jesus' Footsteps in the
