Mon, Nov 9, 7 pm:  Presentation by Mark Braverman, a psychologist and executive director of Kairos USA, providing "an American Jewish perspective on peace in the Holy Land."  Hosted by Kairos West Michigan.  At Christ Memorial Church (east entrance E or D), 24^th St and Grafschaap Rd, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 13, 7:15 pm:  Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) meeting: Discussion of "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien (see information on the book, below at The Big Read).   Open to all.  Discussion facilitated by Dr. Stephen Maiullo of Hope College.  Prior to discussion, please tour the student exhibit of art, photography, videography, and audio recordings "The Stories We Choose To Tell: How Do They Shape Us?" inspired by the book.  396-2201. Sat, Nov 14, 4:45 – 6:15 pm (dinner); 7 pm (showcase):  "IMAGES: A Reflection of Cultures," by Hope College international students.  (1) Dinner in the Phelps Hall dining room, 154 East 10^th St at Columbia Ave, will feature cuisine from many places around the world.  $6 for community members.  (2) International showcase will feature skits, dance, song, and other clips of culture through languages and fashions, by more than 60 students from several countries.  Free.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8^th St, Holland.  "IMAGES" is sponsored by the Fried International Center at the college.

 

Sun, Nov 15, 11:30 am – 3 pm:  Health Fair with vendors and agencies, blood pressure, blood glucose screenings, samples, written literature about services. Organized by students in  community health nursing at University of Detroit Mercy/Aquinas College.  At St. Francis de Sales Parish,  13^th and Maple, Holland.

 

The Big Read Events

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, "designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture; it supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences."  In Holland, this year's Big Read is the "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, about the Vietnam War, those who were part of it, and what happened in their lives.  Hope College, Herrick District Library, and others have organized  these events:

 

--Tues, Nov 10, 7:30 pm: "A Musical Journey to Vietnam with Van-Anh Vo," Emmy Award-winning artist in a program of traditional music from North, Central, and South Vietnam; arrangements of Western contemporary music for Vietnamese instruments; and her original compositions.  In collaboration with Hope College jazz students and faculty. At St. Francis de Sales Parish, 13^th St and Maple Ave, Holland.

 

--Wed, Nov 11, 7 pm: Veteran's Day Memorial at The Commons of Evergreen.  Holland Area Veterans Council presents its annual program, featuring the Holland American Legion Band.  The Michigan Vietnam Wall memorial will be on display,  beginning at 4 pm.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.

 

--Mon, Nov 16, 7 pm:  "Moral Injury after War."  Chaplain Col. Herman Keizer, Jr, U.S. Army retired, looks at the hidden wounds of war; learn how religious communities can become partners in the healing of moral injury.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

--Tues, Nov 17, 7 pm:  Give Back to Veterans Play Group.  Family-oriented event  includes reading a book, taking part in a craft, learning about things soldiers carried, and supporting vets through a service project with A Million Thanks and another local group, About Proximity, benefiting vets.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

--Thurs, Nov 19, 7 pm:  Author Tim O'Brien: "The Things They Carried."  O'Brien speaks candidly about war and loss in a presentation about his book.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.

Johnson, associate professor of history at Hope College and a former Marine infantry officer.  (50 free copies of the book will be available at this event.)  At Maas Auditorium, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 11^th St, Holland.

 

--Tues, Nov 3, 7 pm:  "Tuesday Tucks Me In," an acclaimed children's book by former U.S. Army captain and best-selling author Luis Carlos Montalvan; he will be accompanied by Tuesday, his Golden Retriever service dog.   Interactive, read-a-long program.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

--Wed, Nov 4, 7 pm:  Documentary: "Naneek."  Follows veteran Tim Keenan, who has dealt with PTSD for more than four decades; he is finally "ready to face his demons and return to Vietnam."  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, Hope College, College Ave at 11^th St, Holland.

--Tues, Nov 10, 7:30 pm: "A Musical Journey to Vietnam with Van-Anh Vo," Emmy Award-winning artist in a program of traditional music from North, Central, and South Vietnam; arrangements of Western contemporary music for Vietnamese instruments; and her original compositions.  In collaboration with Hope College jazz students and faculty. --Wed, Nov 11, 7 pm: "Veteran's Day Memorial at The Commons of Evergreen."  Holland Area Veterans Council presents its annual program, featuring the Holland American Legion Band.  The Michigan Vietnam Wall memorial will be on display,  beginning at 4 pm.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.

 

--Fri, Nov 13, 7 pm:  "The Stories We Choose to Tell: How Do They Shape Us?"  Exhibition of works by local middle and high school students, using O'Brien's book as a source of reference, reflection, and inspiration.  Includes videography, photography, text, and audio recordings.

---7:30 pm:  Discussion of O'Brien's book, hosted by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); open to all.   Exhibit and discussion both at Holland Armory, 9^th St between River and Central, Holland.

 

--Mon, Nov 16, 7 pm:  "Moral Injury after War."  Examine the hidden wounds of war with Chaplain Col. Herman Keizer, Jr, U.S. Army retired.  A look at the history of this wound of war; learn how religious communities can become partners in the healing of moral injury.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

--Tues, Nov 17, 7 pm:  "Give Back to Veterans Play Group."  Family-oriented event  includes reading a book, taking part in a craft, learning about things soldiers carried, and supporting vets through a service project with A Million Thanks and another local group benefiting vets.  At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.

 

--Thurs, Nov 19, 7 pm:  Author Tim O'Brien: The Things They Carried.  O'Brien speaks candidly about war and loss in a presentation about his book.  At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.
