Members and friends work together through programs, outreach, advocacy, and social events to make West Michigan a place where all people are welcomed and respected. Tues, Nov 3, 7 am – 8 pm: Polls open for area elections, including for Holland mayor and city council.
Wed, Nov 4, 4 pm to 8 pm: Eat Bread to Raise Dough: Fundraiser for Hope College TRIO Upward Bound. Panera Bread will donate a percentage of its sales during the event. Must present event flyer, which you can obtain by calling 395-7745 or asking for one to be sent to you via email; can also pick up at Upward Bound office in Graves Hall, Hope College. Thurs, Nov 5, 6 pm to 8 pm: Share Your Voice/Comparte Tu Voz: Community Visioning for City of Holland Master Plan. Dinner provided, all ages welcome. Participants will work together to identify assets and issues in the community in a relaxed, informal setting to help the City of Holland's Master Plan reflect the diverse perspectives of residents. Fri, Nov 6, 6 pm: 2015 Annual Celebration Dinner of Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP). Silent auction, cash bar, food by Margaritas. Program focusing on Latinos who have come to Holland and settled in the community, debuting a collection of their stories collected in collaboration with City of Holland, Herrick District Library, GVSU, and St. Francis de Sales Parish; information on Day of the Dead traditions. Sat, Nov 7, 9 am-5 pm: 20th Annual Kalamazoo Russian Festival. Musical and dance performances, children's activities, art gallery, lectures by Russian scholars, Russian marketplace with crafts and packaged foods for sale. Grammy- and Latin Grammy-winning pianist, composer, and bandleader Jesús (Chucho) Valdez and his Havana-based band that "fuses Afro-Cuban ritual and popular music, jazz, and rock." Mon, Nov 9, 7 pm: Presentation by Mark Braverman, a psychologist and executive director of Kairos USA, providing "an American Jewish perspective on peace in the Holy Land." Hosted by Kairos West Michigan. At Christ Memorial Church (east entrance E or D), 24th St and Grafschaap Rd, Holland.
Sun, Nov 15, 11:30 am – 3 pm: Health Fair with various vendors and agencies, blood pressure and blood glucose screenings, samples and written literature providing services. Organized by students in a community health nursing program at University of Detroit Mercy/Aquinas College. At St. Francis de Sales Parish, 195 West 13th (13th and Maple), Holland.
The Big Read Events
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, "designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture; it supports organizations across the country in developing community-wide programs that encourage reading and participation by diverse audiences." In Holland, this year's Big Read is the "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, about the Vietnam War, those who were part of it, and what happened in their lives. Hope College, Herrick District Library, and others have organized these events:
--Mon, Nov 2, 7 pm: "The Legacy of Their Burdens," a presentation by Dr. Fred L. Johnson, associate professor of history at Hope College and a former Marine infantry officer. (50 free copies of the book will be available at this event.) At Maas Auditorium, Hope College, Columbia Ave at 11th St, Holland.
--Tues, Nov 3, 7 pm: "Tuesday Tucks Me In," an acclaimed children's book by former U.S. Army captain and best-selling author Luis Carlos Montalvan; he will be accompanied by Tuesday, his Golden Retriever service dog. Interactive, read-a-long program. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.
--Wed, Nov 4, 7 pm: Documentary: "Naneek." Follows veteran Tim Keenan, who has dealt with PTSD for more than four decades; he is finally "ready to face his demons and return to Vietnam." At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, Hope College, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.
--Tues, Nov 10, 7:30 pm: "A Musical Journey to Vietnam with Van-Anh Vo," Emmy Award-winning artist in a program of traditional music from North, Central, and South Vietnam; arrangements of Western contemporary music for Vietnamese instruments; and her original compositions. In collaboration with Hope College jazz students and faculty. At St. Francis de Sales Parish, 13th St and Maple Ave, Holland.
--Wed, Nov 11, 7 pm: Veteran's Day Memorial at The Commons of Evergreen. Holland Area Veterans Council presents its annual program, featuring the Holland American Legion Band. The Michigan Vietnam Wall memorial will be on display, beginning at 4 pm. At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.
--Fri, Nov 13, 7 pm: "The Stories We Choose to Tell: How Do They Shape Us?" Exhibition of works by local middle and high school students, using O'Brien's book as a source of reference, reflection, and inspiration. Includes videography, photography, text, and audio recordings.
---7:30 pm: Discussion of O'Brien's book, hosted by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH); open to all. Exhibit and discussion both at Holland Armory, 9th St between River and Central, Holland.
--Mon, Nov 16, 7 pm: "Moral Injury after War." Chaplain Col. Herman Keizer, Jr, U.S. Army retired, looks at the hidden wounds of war; learn how religious communities can become partners in the healing of moral injury. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.
--Tues, Nov 17, 7 pm: Give Back to Veterans Play Group. Family-oriented event includes reading a book, taking part in a craft, learning about things soldiers carried, and supporting vets through a service project with A Million Thanks and another local group benefiting vets. At Herrick District Library, 300 South River, Holland.
--Thurs, Nov 19, 7 pm: Author Tim O'Brien: "The Things They Carried." O'Brien speaks candidly about war and loss in a presentation about his book. At The Commons of Evergreen, 480 State St, Holland.

Perspectivas, through Nov. 6: Photographers Luis Fonseca, Roli Mancera, and Raul Alejandro Velasco, all born in Mexico, use their work "to celebrate the culture and history of Mexico, to hold up a mirror to the human condition, to call others to social action, and to say what can't be expressed with words alone."
