Tues, Nov 15, 7 pm: Keynote address for The Big Read, by author Edwidge Danticat, author of "Brother, I'm Dying."  At Dimnent Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.

 

Wed, Nov 16, 6 pm:  Big Read:  With Dr. James Dumerauf: a short lecture and small group discussion focusing on medical themes and questions found in "Brother, I'm Dying."  Refreshments.  At Holland Hospital conference rooms A & B, 602 Michigan Ave, Holland.

              

Thurs, Nov 17, 7 pm:  Big Read: Student Art Exhibit.  Open house to showcase hundreds of students works of art created in response to "Brother, I'm Dying."  Collaborative projects with Big Read artists-in-residence Barry Elz and Joel Schoon-Tanis.  Refreshments by Lemonjellos.  Exhibit will be open to the public Nov 18-23 from 11 am to 4 pm.  At Holland Armory, 9th St between Central and College Aves, Holland.

 

Fri, Nov 18, 7 pm support group; 8:10 pm program:  PFLAG meeting.  Showing part I of DVD "Out in America," in which LGBT persons tell about falling in love and coming out.  Trans group meets 6 pm to 7 pm.  At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Mon, Dec 5:  Deadline for submission of nominations for 2016 Social Justice Awards in the categories of Housing, Education, Employment, and Government/Community, as well as an award for a youth between age 13 and 19 from the Holland Human Relations Commission.  Go to www.cityofholland.com, Calendar page; then click on Government and then Human Relations Commission for information on criteria and applications.  (616) 355-1322.

 

Opportunity for Youth

To engage youth in the observance of Martin Luther King Jr Day, and to recognize the importance of young people in moving King's dream forward, the Holland Human Relations Commission has announced the following opportunityt:

 

 "I Have a Dream" Essay Competition: Students in grades 4 through senior high may submit essays that describe their dreams for equal access and opportunity in their schools or communities:  Papers should be 2 to 3 pages, double-spaced, and include the following: (1) What is your dream?  (2) Why is this important for our future? (3) What will you do at school to promote equality and access in our community?

 

 Each submission should include the student's full name and current grade, name of school, and a parent or guardian's telephone number.  Competitive categories: (1) 4th and 5th grades; (2) 6th, 7th, and 8th grades; (3) 9th through 12th grades.  Winners in each category will receive a $50 gift certificate and  have the opportunity to read their essays at the Social Justice Awards ceremony January 16, 2017.

 

Submissions are due by midnight, Monday, Dec 12, 2016.  Essays may be submitted online to hrc@cityofholland.com, mailed, or delivered to City of Holland, Human Relations Department, 2nd floor of City Hall, 270 South River Ave, Holland, MI 49423.  For more info, or questions, call Esther Fifelski at (616) 355-1322.

 Thurs, Nov 10, 4 pm: Annual Native American Lecture: "Tribal Legacy: Understanding Community through the Lens of Native American Culture," presented by Lorraine "Punkin" Shananaquet, a community health representative and fitness coordinator for Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi.  Sponsored by Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion in conjunction with Native American Heritage Month.  At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, 257 Columbia Ave, Holland.

 Thurs, Nov 10, 7 pm: Film, "Poverty Inc": documentary that looks at charitable institutions and their role in fighting poverty; questions whether aid institutions themselves are sometimes a hindrance in fighting poverty.  Haitian entrepreneur Daniel Jean Louise will speak after the film.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

 Fri, Nov 11, 10:30 am – 4 pm: Ottawa County Diversity Forum. Focus on what organizations are doing to build on the strength of diversity; how to "engage people, advance ideas, and be a catalyst for change around the topics of diversity, inclusion, and equality."  Sunday, Nov 13, 9:40 am: Documentary, discussion: "Our Brother Dan: Families in the Crossfire"; part of church's Adult Education Series.  Story of a young man "struggling to cope with his sexual orientation and a terminal illness; persons like him and their families are in the crossfire of society's conflict and their own pain and the stigma associated with it."  Produced by David Blauw, a pastor and a chaplain at Holland Hospital, based on the story of a young man he met years ago in New Jersey.
