Mon, Nov 7, 7 pm: Film, "La Belle Vie/The Good Life": Haitian American filmmaker Rachelle Salnave's journey to discover her Haitian roots examines "complexities of the political and economic dichotomy in Haiti." Salnave (director/producer) and Jean H. Marcelin (director of photography) will discuss the film. A Big Read event. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.

Wed, Nov 9, 7 pm: "Immigration: National Issue, Local Impact." Sarah Yore-Van Oosterhout, local immigration lawyer, and historian Dr. Aaron Van Oossterhout discuss current U.S. immigration system and the ways it impacts our local community. At Howard Miller Library, 14 South Church St, Zeeland.
Thurs, Nov 10, 4 pm: Annual Native American Lecture: "Tribal Legacy: Understanding Community through the Lens of Native American Culture," presented by Lorraine "Punkin" Shananaquet, a community health representative and fitness coordinator for Gun Lake Band of Pottawatomi. Sponsored by Hope College Center for Diversity and Inclusion in conjunction with Native American Heritage Month. At Martha Miller Center Fried-Hemenway Auditorium, 257 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Thurs, Nov 10, 7 pm: Film, "Poverty Inc": documentary that looks at charitable institutions and their role in fighting poverty; questions whether aid institutions themselves are sometimes a hindrance in fighting poverty. Haitian entrepreneur Daniel Jean Louise will speak after the film. At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 West 8th St, Holland.
Fri, Nov 11, 10:30 am – 4 pm: Ottawa County Diversity Forum. Focus on what organizations are doing to build on the strength of diversity; how to "engage people, advance ideas, and be a catalyst for change around the topics of diversity, inclusion, and equality." Hosted by Ottawa County Cultural Intelligence Committee with county government, LEDA, and Government Alliance for Racial Equity. $10 includes lunch. Sunday, Nov 13, 9:40 am: Documentary, discussion: "Our Brother Dan: Families in the Crossfire"; part of church's Adult Education Series. Story of a young man "struggling to cope with his sexual orientation and a terminal illness; persons like him and their families are in the crossfire of society's conflict and their own pain and the stigma associated with it." Produced by David Blauw, a pastor and a chaplain at Holland Hospital, based on the story of a young man he met years ago in New Jersey. At Hope Church RCA, 72 West 11th Sst, Holland.
Tues, Nov 15, 7 pm: Keynote address for The Big Read, by author Edwidge Danticat, author of "Brother, I'm Dying." At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.
