Sat, Feb 23, 10 am: Gender S.A.F.E.-hosted Jazz & Friends Gathering: "Creating welcoming and affirming spaces for transgender and non-binary youth with intentional gatherings that foster understanding through the reading of inclusive children's literature such as 'I Am Jazz.'" Community reading followed by discussion and Q&A. National program partners with Human Rights Campaign and National Education Association. At Herrick District Library, main floor reading room, 300 S. River, Holland.
Sat, Feb 23, 6 pm to 8 pm: International Food Fair. Hope College international and "TCK" (third-culture kids) students prepare foods from their home countries. Sponsored by Fried Center for Global Engagement. Admission is $5 for a packet of 5 tickets; additional tickets are 50 cents each; most dishes cost one or two tickets. Cash only; please bring small bills or exact amount for the tickets you plan to buy. At Hope College Maas Center, 264 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Sat, Feb 23, 7 pm: HOSA (Holland's Openly Secular Alliance) gathering. "Bring books and words that changed the direction of your life, assisted you to share or reshape your world view, and/or articulated your most blasphemous and heretical thoughts," to share with others who attend. At OOTL Center, 451 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Sat, Feb 23, 1 pm to 3 pm: Gospel Fest Concert: Multiple regional choirs, including Hope College Community Gospel Choir. Co-sponsored by Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Campus Ministries program. Public is invited. Free admission; free-will offering will be taken. At Dimnent Memorial Chapel, College Ave at 12th St, Holland.
Mon, Feb 25, 4 pm to 5:30 pm: "I See Me: Fostering Diversity & Inclusion through Imagination." Presentation for teachers and others by Jessica Anne Bratt, youth services librarian at GR Public Library. Hosted by Diversity Rocks the Book program of Holland Human Relations Commission www.diversityrocksthebookholland.com and many local partners. At Holland Museum, 31 West 10th St, Holland.
Mon, Feb 25, 6:30 to 8:30 pm: Community launch party for new book by Lisa Van Engen: "And Social Justice for All: Empowering Families, Churches, and Schools to Make a Difference in God's World." Evening includes scavenger hunt, photo booth, face painting, refreshments. At Intersection Ministries, 136th Ave at Riley, Holland.
Tues, Feb 26, 7 pm: "The History of African Americans in West Michigan," presented by Dr. Fred Johnson, associate professor of history at Hope College. At Herrick District Library, 300 South. River, Holland.
Wed, Feb 27, 7 pm: "I'm Still Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness," by author and justice advocate Austin Channing Brown. Keynote address for Black History observance. Her book (same title as above) looks at "how white, middle-class Evangelicalism has participated in an era of rising racial hostility, inviting the reader …to discover how blackness—if we let it—can save us all." Free. Hosted by Hope College SAC and Center for Diversity and Inclusion. At Jack Miller Center, 221 Columbia Ave, Holland.
Thurs, Feb 28, 7 pm: Black Voices musical theater. Using speech and song, Maple Avenue Ministries 4C choir and friends "take first-person narratives and dialogue between both black and white characters and lay out a story line": Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr, Frederick Douglass, the Roosevelts, Thurgood Marshall, Langston Hughes, Nina Simone, others. Community Opportunities
Bilingual teacher for citizenship class: Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates is working with Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) to organize its next citizenship class and needs a bilingual (English/Spanish) teacher who can commit to teaching once a week for 10 weeks. Ideally, class meets in the morning, but the specific day and schedule can be negotiated. Nominal compensation available. Through Mar 10, 2019: "SONS: Seeing the Modern African American Male." More than 80 photographs of Muskegon men. Photography and video are used "to mimic the process of prejudging people…and reconciling prejudgments with realities." At Muskegon Museum of Art, 296 West Webster Ave, Muskegon.
Through Mar 30: "Enlightened Harmony": 20th-century Japanese Art from the Hesslink Collection. Japanese prints, textiles, ceramics, and lacquers collected by John and Etta Hesslink in Japan. At Kruizenga Art Museum, 271 Columbia Ave, Holland.

SAVE THE DATE! ACEH will hold its 20th anniversary celebration "March into the Future" on Saturday, March 16, from 5 pm to 8:30 pm at First United Methodist Church, 57 West 10th St in Holland. Entertainment, silent auction of goods and services, family activities, delicious foods, and warm fellowship at this Cultural Sharing Party and Potluck! Everyone is welcome.
The auction is always popular with people who come to our community potlucks; it's a way for local businesses and organizations to both support our work for a welcoming community and to receive recognition for their goods and services. Could you donate gift cards, event tickets, certificates for classes, or a product that you create by hand or manufacture? --Or you can join at any ACEH program or social event.
Dues are $20 per year for an individual ($35, two years);
$30 per year for a couple or family ($50, two years);
$40 for a nonprofit;
$75 for a business.
In lieu of (or in addition to) paying dues, you may join as a service member, volunteering for the group. ACEH is a 501c3 organization. Our fiscal year is October 1 to September 30.
