 Sun, Nov 10, 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm:  Documentary: "Rhythm and Race: A history of African American music in Grand Rapids."  Explores how music genres influenced social justice system in Grand Rapids after World War II, up to the 1970s. West Michigan Creative Arts-Technology students interviewed community leaders and local music influencers; film highlights various music "hot spots" in GR at the time.  Production team included WMCAT teaching artist Mike Saunders and Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives founder George Bayard III.  At Fountain Street Church, 24 Fountain St, NE, Grand Rapids.

 Mon, Nov 11, 7 pm-8 pm:  Latinx Children's Books: What to Know and How to Read Them.  Hope College literature professors Dr. Regan Postma-Montaño and Dr. Jesus Montaño offer ideas of books to share with children.  At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.

 Mon, Nov 11- Sat, Nov 16, 7:30 pm: Film: "Yuli." Based on true story of Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta who, though he initially does not want to dance, eventually becomes a phenomenon in the dance world and is the first black dancer to perform some of the most famous ballet roles.  Not rated; in Spanish with English subtitles.  At Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St, Holland.

 Tues, Nov 12, 7 pm:  Big Read author Julia Alvarez ("In the Time of the Butterflies") speaks at Jack H. Miller Center, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.

 Wed, Nov 20, 7 pm to 9 pm:  Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates: Strength in Stories.  An evening of celebration, reflection, empowerment.  Hear from former LIA clients about their experiences going through the immigration system and how they are continuing their journey in the U.S.  Small appetizers/desserts.  $10 individual, $14 per couple.  Get tickets at www.lia-michigan.org  At Brew Merchant Pub, 442 Washington Ave, Holland.

 Thurs, Nov 21, 7 pm: "A Deal Too Good to Refuse: A Cautionary Tale of the Space Traders."  Hope College professor Dr. Fred Johnson III, analyzes history of the nation's race relations to determine whether the U.S., if presented with the opportunity, would get rid of its African American citizens relative to the short story and film Space Traders.  Program is one of several around the THEM exhibit.  Wed, Oct 23, 1:30 pm:  Open house and discussion on proposed zoning ideas, housing survey results; Q&A follows.  The City of Holland is crafting "a user-friendly, graphic-heavy, Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) to combine all city laws concerning development, to help people to better understand and apply the standards. Looks at each zone district and the general standards to determine how the city can be more responsive to 21st century needs."  Free; public is invited to share ideas.  At Nuestra Casa community center, 253 West 15th, Holland.

 Fri, Oct 25, 6 pm:  Right to Housing Rally: No More Tents!  A public event to create more support for affordable housing and an end to homelessness in our community; no one should have to live in a tent or car, especially in the cold fall and winter months.  Get a sign and put up a tent on your property.  Mon, Oct 28, 5:30 pm:  Annual Ability Award celebration: "Honors those who persist in vision of communities where people with disabilities can participate, contribute, belong." Social Justice Awards:  The City of Holland's Human Relations Commission (HRC) seeks nominations for the 2019 Social Justice Awards in the categories of Housing, Education, Employment, and Government/Community Relations.  There's also a Student/Youth category for ages 13-19.  Nominated individuals or organizations should "exemplify the virtues of social justice by promoting equal opportunity and access for all."  Submit nominations by Fri, Nov 1, at www.cityofholland.com/182/Human-Relations  Awards will be presented Jan 15, 2020.

 Holland Area Arts Council, with Lakeshore Housing Alliance and United Way, is supporting National Homelessness Awareness Month by inviting people of all ages in Ottawa and surrounding counties to submit a sculpture "expressing what home (current, past, or imagined) feels like to them.
