Sun, Nov 10, 12:45 pm to 2:45 pm: Documentary: "Rhythm and Race: A history of African American music in Grand Rapids." Explores how music genres influenced social justice system in Grand Rapids after World War II, up to the 1970s. West Michigan Creative Arts-Technology students interviewed community leaders and local music influencers; film highlights various music "hot spots" in GR at the time. Production team included WMCAT teaching artist Mike Saunders and Grand Rapids African American Museum and Archives founder George Bayard III. Mon, Nov 11, 7 pm-8 pm: Latinx Children's Books: What to Know and How to Read Them. Hope College literature professors Dr. Regan Postma-Montaño and Dr. Jesus Montaño offer ideas of books to share with children. At Herrick District Library, 300 S. River, Holland.
Mon, Nov 11- Sat, Nov 16, 7:30 pm: Film: "Yuli." Based on true story of Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta who, though he initially does not want to dance, eventually becomes a phenomenon in the dance world and is the first black dancer to perform some of the most famous ballet roles. Wed, Nov 20, 7 pm to 9 pm: Lighthouse Immigrant Advocates: Strength in Stories. An evening of celebration, reflection, empowerment. Hear from former LIA clients about their experiences going through the immigration system and how they are continuing their journey in the U.S. Small appetizers/desserts. $10 individual, $14 per couple. Thurs, Nov 21, 7 pm: "A Deal Too Good to Refuse: A Cautionary Tale of the Space Traders." Hope College professor Dr. Fred Johnson III, analyzes history of the nation's race relations to determine whether the U.S., if presented with the opportunity, would get rid of its African American citizens relative to the short story and film Space Traders.
