Fri., Apr 28, 8 pm:  Cultural Celebration featuring Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, first all-female mariachi ensemble in U.S. Mariachi music; songs in Spanish and English.  Fundraiser for Multicultural Association of Professionals (MAP), presented by MAP and Grand Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce; underwritten by Huntington Bank. Sat., Apr 29,  9 am to 7 pm:  African Art for a Heart sale of Senegalese, Zambian, South African, Malian art.  Sponsored by Faith Christian Reformed Church to raise funds for non-covered medical expenses of Holland resident and community activist Fronse Smith, who will have mitrial valve correction heart surgery this year. At the church, Michigan Ave and 26^th St., across the street from Holland Hospital.

 

Sun., Apr 30, 4 pm: Concert in celebration of Cinco de Mayo, with CJ Kingdom-Grier and the ensemble Alabanza & Adoración.  Songs in English and Spanish will include contemporary praise and worship songs, to salsa and meringue music in a gospel style.

SPRING ESL CLASSES:  Davenport University is offering two sets of classes to help intermediate-level non-native speakers of English improve skills in speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary. 10-week classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays, mornings or evenings, starting May 2 and ending July 13.  Day classes meet 9 to 10 am; evening classes, 6 to 7:30 pm   $300 plus $45 for required textbook. Thurs., Apr 20, 7:30 pm: Rosa Parks tribute concert, by the Hpoe College Wind Symphony, including two works written to honor Mrs. Parks.  History professor Dr. Fred Johnson III will read poems and excerpts from sermons in-between the musical pieces; the college faculty Jazz Trio will play and feature guest performers and soloists.  Free. ACEH/Hope Event on Campus Friday, April 14

TELEVISION ANCHOR SHOWS DOCUMENTARY APRIL 14 on HOPE'S CAMPUS

 

WOOD-TV anchor Brian Sterling of 24 Hours News 8 will show the documentary “Race in Reality” at 7 p.m. Friday, April 14, in the Maas Auditorium, Hope College, Columbia  Avenue at 11^th Street.   Discussion will follow.  There’s no charge, and the public is invited.

 

The event is sponsored by the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH), in partnership with Hope’s Office of Multicultural Life.

 

“Race in Reality” follows participants in a Grand Rapids Institute for Healing Racism as they confront racism and prejudice in themselves and society, and consider ways to bring about healing.
