Tonight, 6 pm: Public ceremony at College Ave. and 19th St., Holland, to rename College Park as Rosa Parks Green, honoring the late civil rights activist. 

 

Sat., June 17, 1 to 6 pm: 7th annual celebration of Juneteenth, “Keeping the Legacy Alive.”  Speaker, activities for families and youth, music, games, local talent contest, step dancers, information booths, barbeque and soul food.  At Kollen Park, on the waterfront at Van Raalte and 10th St., Holland.

 

Tues., June 20, 7 pm:  “Understanding the New Immigration Bills,” educational forum with immigration attorneys Danny Upton, Robert Alvarez, and Jose Sandoval; Jon De Witte, district director for Cong. Peter Hoekstra; and Paul Troste of Sen. Carl Levin’s district office. Moderator, Rev. Andy Fierro.  Free, open to the public, child care provided for infants to age 5.  Sponsored by Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony, Community Action House, Crossroad Chapel, Justice for Our Neighbors, Lakeshore Ethnic Diversity Alliance, Latin Americans United for Progress, St. Francis de Sales Church.  At St. Francis de Sales Church, Maple Ave. and 13th St., Holland.

Friday, June 9:  There will be no regular meeting of the Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony this month.  Instead, please save the evening of Tuesday, June 20; plans are under way for an educational forum on the new immigration bills.  More information will be coming.

Tues., May 23, 9 am to noon: Diversity and Inclusion  Roundtable: Culturally Competent Health Care.  Munirah Mawusi, director of the Woodrick Institute, will assist participants in building capacity to understand current health care disparities, explore their own cultural perspectives, and learn communication skills that help in providing competent and inclusive care to a diverse customer/patient base.  Free, but registration required.

Tues., May 23, 5:30 to 7 pm: Super Tuesday Celebration, a collaboration of the City of Holland, Center for Women in Transition, and Community Action House, working together to empower and celebrate families in the community.  Free dinner and beverages, free bike registration, free safety bike flag, games, fire truck, face painting; register to win a bike.  Everyone is welcome.  At Kollen Park, Van Raalte and 10th St., Holland.

 

Wed., May 24, 7:30 pm: Film, “Military Myths,” hosted by Jasiu Milanowski.  Film has interviews with former military personnel and focuses on young people of color who are recruited by the military with various incentives.  Free, and open to the public. Discussion will follow.  At Leaf and Bean Too, Columbia Ave and 19th St., Holland.

 

Sat., May 27, 10 am to 5 pm: Personal Prayer: A Symposium, including presenters from Native American, Islam, Orthodox Christianity, Hinduism, Interfaith, and Sufi traditions.
