Sat, April 11, 2 pm to 10 pm, and Sun, April 12, noon to 4 pm: Celebrating All Walks of Life Traditional Pow Wow, presented by Native American Student Association at Grand Valley.  Dancing, drumming, singing by Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi participants.  Grand Entry ceremonies with honored elders and veterans at 2 pm and 7 pm Saturday, noon Sunday.  Food; vendor sales. Tues, April 14, 2 pm:  "Building Strong Communities through Faith"; speaker is Patrick A. NOTE New Date and Time:

Mon, April 20, 6 pm to 8 pm (students speak at 6 pm):  Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) general meeting, with program presented by Hope College students and Holland police officers. Students will speak about their experience with a police training exercise; officers from the patrol unit, K-9, SWAT, and other units will show types of equipment used in various situations and discuss what determines a level of response to incidents they encounter.  Open to the public.  For more information, contact John Yelding at yelding@hope.edu  Tentatively scheduled for  Maas Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 11^th St, Holland. Wed, April 22, 6 pm: Holland Citizens Taskforce meeting.  Presentation by John Golaszewski, Michigan Department of Civil Rights, on ALPACT (Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust), a Michigan organization of community people, civil rights and civil liberties groups, and leaders from law enforcement concerned with issues affecting police and community relations.  At Imagine Fellowship, 167 West 20th, Holland.

 

Fri, April 24, 1:30 pm: Program "Bringing the Fire to Student Success!" by author and education expert Baruti Kafele, who relates identity, equity, discipline, focus, and resiliency to student success in the classroom. Event intended for students grades 6-12, parents, mentors, and youth-based community mentors.  At Holland High School Performing Arts Center, 600 Van Raalte Ave, Holland.

 

Community Opportunities

Alliance for Bilingual Arts is looking for actors and others interested in bilingual arts.  Rehearsals April 12, 25, and 26, for a performance on April 26.  Spanish speakers "strongly encouraged" but not required.  Contact Hope College Theatre Dept (395-7600) or Multicultural Education (395-7867) or Holland Civic Theatre (616) 566-4059 for information.

 

4-H Tech Wizards program needs 4 men and 2 women to mentor youth in grades 6-8, two hours a week for a year, including summer, Tuesdays 4 to 6 pm or 6 to 8 pm.  Program focuses on the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills; most students also take part in t Hope College Step Up program.  Mentors do not have to be "rocket scientists," but willing to learn new things while building positive relationships with youth.
