Thurs, Apr 9, 11 am: "Restoring Peace in the Holy Land": Speaker: Amos Gvitz, founder of Israel Coalition Against Home Demolition and founder of Israelis and Palestinians for Non-Violence. Open to the public. Sponsored by Hope International Education Office and student group Hope United for Justice. At Martha Miller Center, Fried Hemenway Auditorium, Columbia Ave at 10th St, Holland.
Sat, April 11, 2 pm to 10 pm, and Sun, April 12, noon to 4 pm: Celebrating All Walks of Life Traditional Pow Wow, presented by Native American Student Association at Grand Valley. Dancing, drumming, singing by Odawa, Ojibwe, and Potawatomi participants. Grand Entry ceremonies with honored elders and veterans at 2 pm and 7 pm Saturday, noon Sunday. Food; vendor sales. At GVSU Field House Arena, Main Court, Allendale.
Tues, April 14, 2 pm: "Building Strong Communities through Faith"; speaker is Patrick A. Miles, Jr., U.S. Attorney for Western District of Michigan. Hosted by Holland Department of Public Safety and the Human Relations Commission "to celebrate community." Thurs, April 16, doors open 6 pm: Annual Reach for the Stars fundraising event for Center for Women in Transition. Keynote speaker: Diane Rosenfeld, director of the Gender Violence Program at Harvard Law School, on sexual assault on campuses, including response and prevention. Mon, April 20, 6 pm to 8 pm (students speak at 6 pm): Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH) general meeting, with program presented by Hope College students and Holland police officers. Students will speak about their experience with a police training exercise; officers from the patrol unit, K-9, SWAT, and other units will show types of equipment used in various situations and discuss what determines a level of response to incidents they encounter. Wed, April 22, 6 pm: Holland Citizens Taskforce meeting. Presentation by John Golaszewski, Michigan Department of Civil Rights, on ALPACT (Advocates and Leaders for Police and Community Trust), a Michigan organization of community people, civil rights and civil liberties groups, and leaders from law enforcement concerned with issues affecting police and community relations. Fri, April 24, 1:30 pm: Program "Bringing the Fire to Student Success!" by author and education expert Baruti Kafele, who relates identity, equity, discipline, focus, and resiliency to student success in the classroom. Community Opportunities
Alliance for Bilingual Arts is looking for actors and others interested in bilingual arts. Rehearsals April 12, 25, and 26, for a performance on April 26. 4-H Tech Wizards program needs 4 men and 2 women to mentor youth in grades 6-8, two hours a week for a year, including summer, Tuesdays 4 to 6 pm or 6 to 8 pm. Program focuses on the importance of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills; most students also take part in t Hope College Step Up program. Mentors do not have to be "rocket scientists," but willing to learn new things while building positive relationships with youth.
