Fri, June 19, 7 pm support group; 8 pm program: PFLAG Holland/Lakeshore meeting: Michigan PFLAG State Coordinator Terri Dinsmore will speak about efforts toward building more acceptance and equality for LGBT persons in Michigan. At Grace Episcopal Church, 555 Michigan Ave, Holland.

 

Sat, June 20, 1 pm – 8 pm:  15^th Annual Juneteenth Festival and Health Fair, a community empowerment and cultural enrichment event, noting the 150th year after the Emancipation Proclamation and "Black Lives Matter."  Everyone is welcome.  Keynote speaker: Vanessa Greene; special guest Janice Allen of Fox 17.  Featuring Zion Lion Reggae Band, Jeri Wade Band, Re-birth, and other artists; children's activities, information and activity tables, including ACEH.  Juneteenth events presented by the African American Awareness and Development Organization (AAADO) and local sponsors.  For information, contact Kim Harris at (616) 610-5146 or go to the website www.aaado.org

Sat, June 27, noon to 5 pm: Third PRIDE Outdoor Festival.  Family-friendly event with theme "We Are Holland."  Face painting, balloon artist, petting zoo, magic show, and other entertainment; information and activity booths from over 40 local businesses and organizations, including ACEH.

Silent auction will benefit new LGBT resource center in Holland.  Organized by a committee of Holland PFLAG, with premier sponsor Herman Miller and sponsors Padnos, PNC Bank, New Holland Brewing Co, and Dr. Pepper/Snapple.  At Window on the Waterfront Park, East 6^th St and College Ave, Holland.

Community Opportunities

Step-Up Mentoring Program needs volunteer mentors and van drivers for its summer day camp at Hope College.  Mentors assist a small group of at-risk middle school students during their classroom and outdoor camp activities led by teachers and program staff. Van drivers transport students between home and campus. Ottawa County 4-H and The Rock Urban Youth Ministry  needs volunteers this summer  "to bring hands-on, experiential learning to children living at the Holland Rescue Mission on Fairbanks Ave." Youth will take part in 4-H clubs on vegetable gardening and one on urban art. (1) Gardening club needs help on Thursday afternoons; no experience working with youth is necessary--just an interest in horticulture and helping your community.  (2) Urban art program needs a local aerosol/graffiti artist to help youth develop their own masterpieces. Looking Ahead: SAVE the DATE

Alliance for Cultural and Ethnic Harmony (ACEH).   The next general meeting will be Monday, July 13, at 7 pm.   Showing 40-minute documentary "Selma: The Bridge to the Ballot," produced by the Southern Poverty Law Center Teaching Tolerance project: "the story of courageous students and teachers, with other activists, who fought a nonviolent battle to win voting rights for African Americans in the South."  Speakers will present information on voting rights and voter registration.

Program is co-sponsored by TRIO/Upward Bound at Hope College.  Everyone is welcome.  At Winants Auditorium, Graves Hall, College Ave at 11th St, Holland.

There have been changes to two events that were listed in the June 8 "In the Community." 

 

(1) The 5K Run/Walk announced as part of the June 13 Multicultural Festival has been posponed until the fall.

Alliance for Bilingual Arts:  This group will perform skits at the Tulipanes Latino Art and Film Festival in the fall and is looking for actors; it's not necessary to be a Spanish speaker or experienced actor--just have a desire to perform and be understood in bilingually.  Rehearsals will start Sunday, July 14, at 4 pm and continue every other Sunday.  For information, contact Margo Walters, 395-7867.
