Wed, Mar 14, 7 pm: "The Struggle for Equity in Education: A Defining Moment in Chicano History," by Paula Crisostomo, social activist and community leader; as a student in the '60s, she led 20,000 Chicanos from five East Los Angeles high schools in a protest against racism and substandard teaching.  Her story became a 2006 HBO movie, "Walk Out."  She directs government and community relations for Occidental College, Los Angeles.  Part of Grand Rapids Community College Diversity Lecture Series XII.  Free, open to the public.  (616) 234-3390.  At GRCC Applied Technology Center, Fountain St. and Ransom Ave., downtown Grand Rapids.

 

Thurs, Mar 15, 7 pm: "Homelessness in Ottawa County: Families in Transition."  Panelists from Holland Rescue Mission, Community Housing Partnership, Ottawa County Community Action Agency, and Center for Women in Transition, and a person who has needed these services speak about recent count of area homeless, experiences of being homeless, current initiatives, future directions.  Sponsored by League of Women Voters of Holland.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, River Ave and 12th St., Holland.

Sat, Mar 17, noon: St. Patrick's Day Parade and celebration.  Parade begins at 8th St Marketplace, travels east on 8th to College Ave.  Wear green, join walkers in the parade.  At 1 pm, storytelling, bagpipes, dancers at Knickerbocker Theatre, 86 East 8th St., Holland.

Mon, Mar 19, 1 pm: "Immigration and America's Future," by Doris Meissner of the Migration Policy Institute, Washington, DC.  Informal remarks on migration issues and their advantages and disadvantages for countries affected.  Light lunch will be served.  Sponsored by Herrick Library and World Affairs Council.  At Herrick District Library auditorium, River Ave and 12th  St., Holland.

 

Mon, Mar 19, 7 pm: Reception for Jose Guadalupe Posada art exhibit of broadsides depicting life in Mexico City at the turn of the 19th century, followed by remarks from artist Jose Narezo of Grand Rapids at 7:30 pm and gallery open house at 8 pm with a mariachi band and Mexican cuisine.
